指宿市の「青隆寺」は平成２年に開山した新しい真言宗のお寺ですが、境内全体が庭園として設えられています。亜熱帯植物の植栽などはいかにも南国の庭といった印象です。「仙巌園」の伝統を受け継ぎ、巨大な山燈籠を配しているほか、江戸時代・薩摩藩の伝統であった中国趣味をさらに拡大し、アジア全域にまでそれを広げてエキゾチックなエレメントを幾つも庭内に配しています。金箔で覆われたお堂のｚは時に衝撃的でもあり、好みの分かれるところですが、江戸時代から日本だけでなく世界を俯瞰していた鹿児島独特の日本庭園と位置付けられるかもしれません。またこの寺の庭園の様式表現は大変幅広く実に多様で、古刹の渋さとは対極の今まさに躍動している現代寺院の庭と言えるでしょう。この青隆寺・庭園は同じく鹿児島県内の仙巌園や知覧武家屋敷庭園群とあわせて訪れるべき庭園だと思います。
