「細川三家老の一人・米田是容(こめだこれなが)・別荘の庭園で、寛文十年（1670年）築庭。江戸時代出版の「築山庭造伝」などに登場するような典型的な江戸時代の庭。複数の緩やかな築山と中央のくびれ部で東西にわかれる瓢箪型の池を中心に地割りしている。主たる景物は、池に浮かぶ岩島や護岸石組とそれと連続する枯滝石組、松を中心とした植栽で、いかにも武家の庭園らしく格式を感じさせる。特に西池の石組が見せ場となっており、丸い岩島の配置などに同時期につくられた水前寺成趣園との共通点が見られる。庭園様式は池泉回遊式庭園。昔の写真を見るとすぐそばに米田家の別荘が建っており庭屋一如の景観美を創出していたことがわかる。細川藩歴代藩主も度々この庭を訪ね、第六代藩主・細川宜紀が、唐代の詩人韓退之（韓治愈）の「山に採り美茹うべし、水に釣り鮮くらうべし、起居に時なくこれあんずる所に適す」という漢詩にちなみ「採釣園」と名付けた。この米田家・別荘敷地は、明治44年(1911年)熊本市立実科高等女学校（後に熊本市立高等女学校）となり、現在では熊本市立必由館高等学校となっている。現校名「必由館」はこの別荘敷地に、米田家子弟教育の家塾「必由堂」があったことに由来する。米田家の建物は近年まで保存されていたが惜しいことに2016年の熊本地震で崩壊し失われた。校内敷地には米田家に由来する井戸などが残されている。

"Saichoen" Kumamoto Prefecture

Built in 1670 in the garden of Korenaga Komeda, one of the "three elders of the Hosokawa clan" in the Edo period. A typical Edo period garden that appears in "Tsukiyama teizo den" published in the Edo period. The grand design is centered around a gourd-shaped pond with multiple gentle artificial hills and a stone bridge over the central constriction. The main scenic spots are the rocky islands floating in the pond, the revetment stones, and the pine trees, which make you feel like a samurai garden. The garden style is a pond spring strolling garden. If you look at the old photographs, you can see that the Yoneda family villa was built right next to it, creating the beauty of the landscape of the garden shop. Successive feudal lords of the Hosokawa domain often visited this garden, and the sixth feudal lord, Yoshinori Hosokawa, wrote a poem saying, "It should be picked in the mountains, fished in water, and is suitable for apricots when you move up." By the way, I named it "Fishing Garden". The site of the Yoneda family and villa became Kumamoto Municipal High School for Girls 44 years ago (1911), and is now Kumamoto Municipal Hitsuyukan High School. The current school name "Hitsuyukan" comes from the fact that there was a Komeda family education school "Hitsuyu do" on the villa site. Even now, wells derived from the Komeda family remain on the premises.
