明治２２年に福岡県田川郡糸田町の「豊国(ほうこく)炭鉱」炭鉱主・山本貴三郎(貴族院議員)が明治２２年に建設した敷地3000坪にも及ぶ迎賓館施設に併設されていた日本庭園。敷地の2000坪が建物、1000坪が庭園であった。また当時の建物はすべてが失われたが、ニュー田川ホテル時代（現マイステイズホテルマネジメント、2019年10月リニューアル）の離れ棟で近代数寄屋建築「翠々」は往時を偲ばせる唯一の日本建築。建築家は近代茶室建築の名建築家であった堀口捨己の可能性が高いと個人的に推察します。それ以外はすべて鉄筋コンクリート建築に建て替えられているが、ロビーラウンジ吹き抜けのガラス窓からは日本庭園がのぞめ、西洋絵画などの調度品と美しく調和している。このような西洋美術品・庭園及び数寄屋建築などが調和しかもしだす美しさがこのホテルならではの大きな特徴となっており特別格調の高さをもたらしている。リニューアル時のインテリアはベルギーのデザイナーが担当した。

明治２２年に庭園が造られた当時の作庭家は不明。山本貴三郎が京都などから名のある庭師や大工を呼び寄せてあたらせた可能性が高い。この秀れた庭園と建築の存在は小倉以外にも知れ渡り、日露戦争直後にこの地を訪れた乃木希典は庭園内に建てられていた寝殿造りの建物に数日間滞在した。当初は1000坪を誇った庭園は300坪を失い700坪のみが残されたが、130年前の築庭当時の雰囲気を現在もよく残しており、松を主体とした庭木の構成は品格高く武家風で、二条城二の丸庭園や隣の山口県の松田屋ホテル庭園などを思い出させる。池の南岸に滝石組があるが松の枝に隠れて見えなくなっている。池泉回遊式庭園の庭園形式はよく保存され、現在でも池の周囲を一周することができる。池は土橋を境に細くなり鑓水となって「松月亭」の前を流れその先で再び小さな池となる。水の澱みは見られず池全体の水の流し方がうまくいっていることは大きな感心に値する。池の水がうまく流せず澱み、蒼藻が発生し濁っている池泉庭園は全国に多い。本来はこの池の水は敷地の東を流れる紫川から取水していたとか、現在は不明。また庭園の南にそびえる足立山(標高597.8m)を借景としているが、周囲のビルで遮られホテルラウンジ吹き抜け２階からわずかにのぞめる程度となっている。リニューアルで新たに作られた池にせり出ずガラスのテラス（屋外結婚式場）が庭園景観を著しく破壊しているが、ウェディング主体の経営ににより庭園が維持されるとしたらやむなしかもしれない。

The Japanese garden of this hotel was built in 1897 by Kisaburo Yamamoto (a member of the House of Representatives), the mining owner of "Hokoku Coal Mine" in Itoda-cho, Tagawa-gun, Fukuoka Prefecture, on a site of approximately 9,917 square meters. It was attached to the extensive guesthouse facility. The land area was 6611.57 square meters, and the building was 3305.79 square meters. Currently, the Art Hotel Group is managing and this hotel was renewed in October 2019. The Tagawa Hotel is the old name. Sukiya style architecture "Shogetu-tei" is a small Japanese building in the Tagawa hotel era, and it is the only Japanese architecture reminiscent of the past. Everything else has been rebuilt in modern architecture. However, the new modern architecture was built with due regard for traditional Japanese gardens. A Japanese garden can be seen through the glass window of the lobby lounge, which is in beautiful harmony with Western paintings. The beautiful harmony of Western art, gardens, and sukiya architecture is a major feature of this hotel, and it brings a high level of dignity. The Belgian designer was in charge of the interior of the renovation.

The gardener at the time when the garden was built in 1890 is unknown. It is highly possible that Kisaburo Yamamoto called in famous gardeners and carpenters from Kyoto and other places. During the Meiji era, the existence of this excellent garden and architecture became known both inside and outside Kokura, and General Maresuke Nogi, who visited the area immediately after the Russo-Japanese War, stayed in a building built in the garden for several days. Initially, the garden, which was 3305.79 square meters, lost 991.736 square meters and left only 2314.05 square meters, but the garden still retains the atmosphere of 130 years ago when it was built, and the composition of the pine-based garden tree is dignified. Highly samurai-like, it reminds me of Nijo Castle Ninomaru Garden and Matsudaya Hotel Garden in Yamaguchi, adjacent prefecture. There is a waterfall stone group on the south shore of the pond, but it is hidden behind a pine branch. The format of the Chisenkaiyu-shiki garden is well preserved and we can still go around the pond even now. The pond becomes a stream at the bridge, becomes a stream, flows in front of "Shogetsu-tei", and then becomes a small pond again. There is no water stagnation. It is a great praise that the flow of water throughout the pond is uninterrupted. There are many pond gardens all over the country where the water in the pond does not flow well and many algae are generated and muddy. This garden is a borrowed scener of Mt. Adachi (597.8m above sea level) towering to the south, but now the surrounding buildings block the view and the view of the hotel lounge from the second floor is a little overlooking the summit. The glass terrace (outdoor wedding hall) protruding from the newly renovated pond has significantly destroyed the landscape of the garden. However, if the management of the wedding is the main reason for maintaining the garden, it must be given up.
