太宰府の菖蒲池では毎年５月末〜６月中旬にかけて花菖蒲の花が満開となり大勢の花見客で賑わいます。花菖蒲の種類は約５５種類、花の数は総数3万本です。日本における花菖蒲栽培の歴史は古く江戸時代にはすでに全盛期を迎えていました。江戸や伊勢そして肥後などが主な栽培地で多くの品種が生み出されたのです。また花菖蒲園も作られ、深川の花菖蒲園へ見物に繰り出すことが江戸市民にとって行楽の年中行事の一つとして欠かせないものとなっていたようで、浮世絵などにその様子が描かれ残されています。日本では花菖蒲そのものが文化となっていたのです。このような歴背景を持つ花菖蒲の名所は全国に多いですが、太宰府の菖蒲池の特徴は以下のような事かと思われます。まず、桟橋で池の中央から鑑賞できること、次に池に沿って梅ケ枝餅屋の客席があり飲食しながら花の鑑賞が出来ること、そして最後は池の背後に広がる太宰府の森の豊かな緑と江戸時代までは神仏習合の聖地だった宝満山までが見通せる豊かな自然景観、などです。花菖蒲の開花期間中は夜間ライトアップも行われています。

The characteristics of the iris pond at Dazaifu Tenmangu are that you can first appreciate it from the center of the pond at the pier, then you can enjoy the flowers while eating and drinking at the Umegae Mochi restaurant along the pond, and finally it spreads behind the pond. A rich natural landscape where you can see the rich greenery of the forest such as Mt. Homan. During the flowering period of the irises, it is also lit up at night.
