"旧牛島家 " 佐賀県佐賀市

佐賀市の旧市街・柳町に残された歴史的建造物７棟で構成される「佐賀市歴史民俗館」の一つ。

江戸時代１７００年代前期に建てられた佐賀市内で最も古い町家建築。別の場所から柳町に移築され３００年前の状態に復元され保存されている。屋敷の側面に伸びる廊下に沿うように作られ蹲がある主庭と、敷地の一番奥まった客用座敷に面して大和塀で囲って作った坪庭、以上２つの庭がある。また坪庭の大和塀の外には蔵に面した広場があり裏庭と呼んでもいい空間となっており飛び石の配置が楽しい。また庭だけでなく建築にも見るべきディテールが多い。店舗入り口の軒をささえる持ち送りはとても重厚で目を見張る。土間の作業スペースには換気穴が設けられており江戸時代の店舗建築の知恵も見られる。また主庭に沿ってのびる廊下の天井は板の張り合わせの向きを巧みに変えて目の錯覚を誘い舟底天井に見せる凝った設らえで遊びを感じさせ、また同じく廊下の外側の板欄間には小菊の花模様の透かし彫りが施されシンプルだが大変瀟洒な美を放ち家人たちのセンスの良さを今に伝える。また室内の欄間に残された繊細で緻密な組子細工や、近江八景の豪華な欄間彫刻はかっての牛島家の財力を物語っている。他にも演技の良い鶴や亀の精巧な金属工芸の釘隠しに込められた願いなど、かってここで暮らした牛島家代々の人々の人生や日々に思いを馳せると時間が経つのを忘れるようだ。

"Former Residence of Ushijima" / Saga City, Saga Prefecture

One of the "Saga City Cultural Museum" consisting of seven historical buildings left in Yanagimachi, the old town of Saga City.

The oldest townhouse building in Saga City built in the early 1700s during the Edo period. It was relocated to Yanagimachi from another location and restored to its 300-year-old state and preserved. The mansion has two gardens. The first is the main garden, which is built along the corridor that extends to the side of the mansion and has the Tsukubai water basin and the Oribe lantern. The second is the Tsubo garden, which faces the deepest guest room on the site and is surrounded by a Yamato board wall. In addition, there is a plaza facing the warehouse, which is a space that can be called a backyard, and the arrangement of stepping stones is fun. There are many details to see not only in the garden but also in the architecture. The ceiling of the corridor that extends along the main garden is elaborately designed to make the ceiling look like the bottom of a boat by skillfully changing the direction of the boards. The upper board on the outside of the same corridor is engraved with a small flower pattern, giving it a simple but very elegant beauty. In addition, there is a fretwork of the scenery of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture on the sliding door of the bran in the room, which is very luxurious, and it seems that they show the financial strength of the former Ushijima family.
