「ホテル北門屋敷 ,貴賓室・桂月」 山口県萩市

ホテル 北門屋敷の「桂月」は平成元年に天皇皇后両陛下が御成婚後はじめてお二人で宿泊された特別な客室です。

無論、この「桂月」は両陛下のために貴賓室として新築され、鉄筋コンクリート造に和式のインテリアを主として西洋風のテイストを加えた現代的な和室となっています。

この部屋には二畳敷の広い床の間があり、皇族へのお迎えの印としています。しかし、インテリアは総体的には堅苦しさを排除した数寄屋様式を主体とし、最初にそこに宿泊された天皇皇后両陛下はもちろん誰もがリラックスして滞在できる空間となっています。シンプルでやさしい紅葉の透かし彫りがあしらわれた欄間が印象的です。

「桂月」は専用の日本庭園をもっています。客室のプライベートを尊重しつつ庭園の一部はホテルのロビーや通路＝パブリックスペースと景観を共有しています。このような配慮は皇室と日本国民が何事も分かち合うことの象徴と言えるでしょう。

パブリックスペースから見える庭園は枯山水で白砂に小石を敷き詰めた半島がのびています。その半島の先端に岬灯籠が置かれ、客室名 「桂月」にちなんだ「桂離宮」庭園の写しであり、皇室とその文化への深い尊敬と共感を表すものとなっています。「桂月」とは「桂の月」を意味しているのです。

また「桂月」客室からのぞむ庭は植栽の抽象的な刈り込みが大変印象的で岡山の頼久寺庭園を思い出させます。やはりその一部はパブリックスペースからも眺めることができます。

窓のそばには六角形の敷石があります。六角形は亀の甲羅を意味し、長寿の祈りが込められています。それらはホテルからの天皇皇后両陛下の長寿を願う御成婚のお祝いの印でもあります。

以上のように特別客室「桂月」およびその庭園は皇室のための特別な設えがなされ、それを前提に鑑賞するとき私達の理解はより深まり意義のあるものとなるのです。

In 1989, His Majesty the Emperor and Empress stayed together for the first time since their marriage in the special guest room "Keigetsu" at Hotel Hokumon Yashiki. At that time, they were still the Crown Prince and Crown Princess.

Of course, this "Keigetsu" was newly built as a VIP room for Their Majesties, and the structure is made of reinforced concrete. The interior is a modern Japanese-style with a western taste added to the Japanese-style base.

In this room, there is a large Tokonoma・床の間 with two tatami mats, which is used as a sign of welcoming the imperial family. However, the overall interior is based on the Sukiya style that eliminates formality, making it a space where everyone can relax, including the Emperor and Empress who stayed there first. The fretwork carving of simple and gentle autumnal leaves is impressive.

"Keigetsu" has its own Japanese garden. Part of the garden shares views with the hotel's public spaces while respecting the privacy of the rooms. Such consideration is a symbol that the Imperial Family and the Japanese people share everything.

The garden that can be seen from the public space is a dry landscape garden with a peninsula covered with white sand and pebbles. At the tip of the peninsula, a ”Misaki stone lantern・岬灯籠” is placed to express respect for the Katsura Imperial Villa and the imperial family. The name of this room "Keigetsu ・桂月“ means "moon of Katsura・桂の月”.

The garden that can be seen from Keigetsu's private space has a very impressive composition of abstract trimming of plants. It reminds us of the Raikyuji garden in Okayama. Some of it can also be seen from public spaces.

There are hexagonal paving stones near the window. In Japan, since ancient times, hexagons have meant turtle shells and have been used to pray for longevity. They will be a sign of congratulations on the marriage from the hotel to Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress.

As mentioned above, the room and garden of the special guest room "Keigetsu" are specially prepared for the imperial family and are a little different from ordinary ones. If we appreciate it with that premise, our understanding will deepen and become meaningful.
