「滝町の滝」山口県山口市

山口市・山口県庁の敷地の一画に「滝町の滝」があります。しばしば誤解されるようですが、この滝は天然ではなく人工です。県庁舎の建設に伴い整備されたもので、県庁内の山口県職員会館食堂の東側の窓から眺められる場所にあります。そもそも山口県庁が現在の場所に置かれることになったのは、幕末の萩藩主・毛利敬親・もうりたかちか（1819-1871）が藩庁を萩から山口の現在の場所に移したことによります。当時そこは「一露山・いちろざん」という名前の山の麓にあたり、敬親は現在の山口県庁舎正面付近に茶室を設けたと言われています。そんな由緒ある場所に滝を中心とした日本庭園の設えがあるのは大変相応しいことではないでしょうか。滝は目測４ｍほどの落差がある規模の大きなもので、日本庭園の滝の手法に基づき、筋のように水を落とす「筋落ち」を２つ並べ、向かって右だけを途中の石の上に水を落とす「段落ち」の設えにしています。滝の周囲には自然の山のように紅葉などが植えられ、確かに人工であることを忘れそうなほどです。しかし、山燈籠も据えられており日本庭園の趣がきちんと添えられています。もちろん滝から流れ出ている渓流も人工の鑓水で沢飛び石でむこうに渡ることもできます。滝の前から大きく蛇行した流れの先には敷地の段差を利用して「二の滝」も作られています。二の滝は基本的には水を一枚の布のように落とす「布落ち」で４段に分けて水を落としています。この滝から先の遣水はそれまでの流れが早い渓流とは趣を変え、流れもゆるく川幅も広がり人里を流れていることを物語るように岸辺に木杭が打たれています。さらに流れはその先でガラリと形式を変えてモダンな切石で囲まれた水路となり鉄筋コンクリートの県庁舎に囲まれたモダンな中庭を直角に折れ曲がりながら巡っていきます。

県庁舎敷地内には明治三年に建立された立派な薬医門や西洋建築の旧山口県庁舎（山口県政資料館）や旧県会議事堂も残され無料で一般公開されていますのであわせて見学することをお勧めします。瑠璃光寺五重塔がある香山公園からも徒歩圏内です。

There is "Takimachi no Taki" in the grounds of the Yamaguchi Prefectural Office in Yamaguchi City. It is often misunderstood and there are some comments on the internet that this waterfall is natural, but it is man-made. It was developed along with the construction of the prefectural office, and was made to be viewed from the cafeteria in the prefectural office.

The waterfall has a drop of about 4m by eye measurement, and was created based on the method of waterfalls in Japanese gardens. There are two waterfalls called "Suji ochi" that drop water like a thin line, and only the right side is set up as "Dan ochi" where water drops on the stone in the middle and makes a splash.

Around the waterfall, autumn leaves are planted like a natural mountain, and although it is easy to forget that it is man-made, a mountain lantern is installed, and the elements of a Japanese garden are properly added.

Of course, the mountain stream flowing out of the waterfall is also man-made. Downstream, a second waterfall has been created using a step on the site. This waterfall is divided into 4 stages by "Nunoochi" which drops water like a sheet of cloth.

The mountain stream that crosses the second waterfall has a different atmosphere and is calm.

Furthermore, the flow changes its form and becomes a waterway surrounded by modern cut stones, and turns around the modern courtyard surrounded by the reinforced concrete prefectural government building while making a right angle.

On the prefectural government building grounds, there is also a splendid Japanese-style gate built in 1870, the Western-style former Yamaguchi Prefectural Government Building (Yamaguchi Prefectural Government Museum), and the former Prefectural Assembly Building, which are open to the public free of charge. It is recommended to visit. It is also within walking distance from Kouzan Park, where the five-storied pagoda of Rurikoji Temple is located.
