"Shinshoji / Zen and garden museum“ Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture
Shinshoji Temple is a special temple of the Kenninji school of Rinzai Buddhism that was opened in 1965. Based on Zen and tea ceremony, the school is open not only to Japan but also to overseas. It is a place where you can look at yourself in order to ``live in the moment'' through Rinzai Zen, and feel what Zen is. The vast grounds are dotted with a 17th century hall relocated from Shiga Prefecture and Sen no Rikyu's tea room restored by Masao Nakamura, and a garden is arranged to connect these buildings. (The above is an excerpt from the official website).
In front of the “main hall,'' which is located at the top of a high stone staircase, is a dry landscape garden created by Kinsaku Nakane, one of the leading gardeners of the Showa era. The pond garden "Shoshintei" at the foot of the mountain was created by Nakane Kinsaku's son "Nakane Shiro" and his son "Nakane Yukihiro". You can see a group of gardens created by three generations of the Nakane family.
The art pavilion ``Kohtei'' (SANDWICH Architectural Design Office, headed by Kohei Nawa), which opened in 2016, is a boat-shaped building with no windows that is softly wrapped entirely in wood. Inside, you can experience an installation inspired by Zen.
