“Shimane Prefectural Government Building Garden” Shimane Prefecture
Shimane Prefectural Government Building was rebuilt with reinforced concrete in 1959. A group of gardens were created in that building in 1966 by Kanto Shigemori.
1. Plaza garden in front of the prefectural office building,
2. The sidewalk garden in front of the prefectural building entrance.
3. A dry landscape garden created between the prefectural government building and the prefectural parliament building.
It consists of the three gardens mentioned above.
First, let's talk about the garden in front of the government building. The government building was built at the back of the site so as not to spoil the view of Shimane Castle, creating a vast green lawn in front of the building. Stonework has been constructed at key points that are designed to link with the landscape of Matsue Castle.
Next, the sidewalk garden in front of the prefectural government building is designed with stepping stones and wave-shaped tiles inherited from Shigemori Kando from his father, Mirei Shigemori, to respect Matsue's garden culture.
The Karesansui between the prefectural office and the prefectural parliament building is very dynamic and reminiscent of Izumo mythology. What is interesting is that stones are placed inside the building in an attempt to connect the indoors and outdoors.
The most distinctive feature of these gardens is that they harmonize with the historical architectural landscape of Matsue Castle and the modernist architectural landscape of the Showa era, and this can be said to be a highlight.
