"Kinryu-ji Temple" Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture

Kinryu-ji Temple was built in 1508 by Harada Okitane, a military commander who was the lord of Takaso Castle in Itoshima, Chikuzen Province, during the Muromachi period, to pray for the soul of his father. The temple grounds are landscaped, and the main hall and the kuri area are very impressive with their unique large-scale pruning. There is also a large dry landscape garden to the left of the mountain gate, with a large standing stone and black pine, and azalea pruning to the right. The date of construction is unknown, but it seems that the grounds were gradually developed into a garden after the main hall was rebuilt in 1981. Itoshima, where Kinryu-ji Temple is located, has been a major hub of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism since ancient times, with Raizan as the center, and a garden culture flourished with 300 lodgings. Kinryu-ji Temple, which is located in the same area, must have been strongly influenced by this. Kinryu-ji Temple may have regained the former culture of Itoshima through its gardens.
