"Taiyoji Temple" Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture
Founded in May 1347 as the Soto Zen sect temple of Suijo-san "Daiyo-ji Temple", it was rebuilt after a fire during the An'ei era (1771-1781), and has since become the family temple of the Shishido family, a branch of the Mori clan that ruled Yamaguchi. Taiyo-ji Temple has a beautiful garden landscape with "Thunder Water" that springs from the rock face behind the temple grounds and the "Shinji Pond" that contains the clear water. There is also a mysterious legend about Taiyo-ji Temple. "Long ago, lightning struck Taiyo-ji Temple and worked as a handyman for three years. When the lightning returned to the sky three years later, it climbed the cliff behind the temple, and water gushed out from the mark made by its claws. The spring was called "Thunder Water" and never dried up, no matter how drought it was." This is called "Thunder's Return of Favor." There are other mysterious legends that remain, so why not visit the temple and find out for yourself.
