福岡県と大分県にまたがる英彦山 (標高約１２００m)は、平安時代より大分県の宇佐神宮を中心とする国東半島と共に九州における神仏習合の一大聖地でした。英彦山は標高８００ｍ以上の山上に３８００の宿坊が密集し１万人以上の人々が暮らす天空都市だったのです。しかし、明治の神仏分離令によりそのほとんどが消滅し、現在では英彦山神宮を残すのみとなっています。明治以前まで、これらの坊では薬草と茶の栽培が行われ、庭園と茶室が営まれていました。それらの庭園遺構は現在も山内のいたるところに残され、そのうち代表的な５庭が国の名勝に指定されています。

名勝に指定されていない庭園にも見るべきものがあります。銅の鳥居から山頂の英彦山神宮へと上る参道石段の両側にも多くの坊の跡がありその敷地に庭園遺構を見ることができますが、今回は参道とは別の場所にある「守静坊（しゅじょうぼう）」「勝圓坊（しょうえんぼう）」「法城坊（ほうじょうぼう）」を紹介します。

英彦山の斜面には石垣で築かれたひな壇状の小さな平地に多くの坊が密集している「谷」と呼ばれる場所が幾つもあります。今回紹介する３つの坊は銅の鳥居からさらに下方に位置する「下谷」と呼ばれる谷にあります。

まず、「守静坊（しゅじょうぼう）」には英彦山内に残る宿坊建築の中で最も古い建物が残されています。建築年代は不明ですが少なくとも１８２３年以前のものです。令和４年春の時点では茅葺き屋根の葺き替え工事が行われており、珍しい作業風景を見ることができました。この坊の前庭には京都から持ち帰り植えられた樹齢２００年以上の一重白彼岸枝垂桜が春には美しい花を咲かせ、英彦山の鄙びた山間に京の雅を添えます。

「守静坊（しゅじょうぼう）」から古い石段を上がっていくと左に小さな棟門が立っています。そこが「勝圓坊（しょうえんぼう）」です。門が開いていれば庭の見学が可能です。門の直ぐむこうに坊の客殿と池泉庭園が見えています。現在は池に水をひきいれていませんが、池には自然石の八つ橋が架けられ、池の背後の斜面には須弥山石などの石が置かれ、池の手前には大きな礼拝石が置かれ立派な山灯籠が立っています。慶応 3(1867)年に建てられた客殿から眺めるための池泉観賞式庭園です。

再び階段降りて「守静坊（しゅじょうぼう）」に戻り銅の鳥居に向かって山道を歩いていく途中の右手の杉林の中にある「法城坊（ほうじょうぼう）」の跡地に、庭園遺構があります。流れ込んだ土砂で池が埋まり護岸も確認できない状況ですが、本来は池泉観賞式庭園だったようです。池の背後に苔むした美しい「三尊石」「富士石」また「不動石」などが残されており一見の価値があります。残された石組みはたいへん瀟洒で往時はさぞ美しい庭であったろうと思われます。斜面を下る流水に架けられた古い石橋を渡って庭園遺構に入ることができますが、もし入る場合は足元の倒木やマムシなどに気をつけて細心の注意を払って危険を回避して下さい。また坊の石垣も鑑賞の価値があります。ここ「法城坊（ほうじょうぼう）」をはじめ下谷では武者返しにも似た美しい反った石垣を見ることができます。

Mt. Hiko (altitude of about 1200m), which straddles Fukuoka and Oita prefectures, has been a major sacred place for Shinto and Buddhism training in Kyushu along with the Kunisaki Peninsula centered on Usa Jingu in Oita prefecture since the Heian period. Mt. Hiko was a sky city where more than 10,000 people lived in a densely populated area of 3,800 shukubo on a mountain with an altitude of 800 m or more. Shukubo is a small religious facility where Yamabushi lives, and Shinto and Buddhism were mixed. Yamabushi is a man who practices religious training in the harsh nature. However, most of them disappeared due to the Meiji decree to separate Shinto and Buddhism, and now only Hikosan Jingu is left. Before the Meiji era, medicinal herbs and tea were cultivated in each shukubo, and there was a tea room and a garden. The ruins of those gardens are still left everywhere in the mountains, of which five representative gardens have been designated as national scenic spots.

There are also things to see in the gardens that are not designated as scenic spots. Many abandoned gardens can be seen on both sides of the stone steps leading from the bronze torii gate to Hikosan Jingu, but there are "Shujobo" and "Shoenbo" below the bronze torii gate, which is a little far from the approach. Introducing "Shoenbo" and "Hojobo".

On the slope of Mt. Hikosan, there is a place called "Tani = valley" where many boys are densely packed on a small flat land like a hinamatsuri built with stone walls, and most of them are in ruins. The three bos introduced this time are located in a valley called "Shimotani" located below the steel torii gate at the entrance of the approach.

First of all, the oldest building in the shukubo architecture that remains on Mt. Hiko remains in "Shujobo". The date of construction is unknown, but at least it dates back to 1823. As of the spring of 4th year of Reiwa, the roof was being re-roofed, and we were able to see a rare work scene. In the front yard of this ward, there is a weeping cherry tree, which is estimated to be over 200 years old, and beautiful flowers bloom in spring.

If you go up the old stone steps from "Shujobo", you will see a small gate on your left. That is "Shoenbo". If the gate is open, you can visit the garden. Immediately beyond the gate, you can see the Bo building and the pond garden. Currently, the pond is not filled with water, but there are eight natural stone bridges in the pond, stones such as Sumiyama stone are placed on the slope behind the pond, and a large mountain lantern is in front of the pond. standing. It is a pond spring ornamental garden for viewing from the guest hall built in 1867.

There is an abandoned garden on the site of "Hojobo" in the cedar forest on the right side on the way to the copper torii gate after going down the stairs again and returning to "Shujobo". The pond is filled with earth and sand, and the revetment stone group cannot be confirmed, but there is no doubt that it was a pond-viewing garden. The beautiful mossy Sanson stone and Fuji stone are left behind the pond and are worth a visit. You can cross the stone bridge over the running water down the slope to enter the garden remains, but if you do, beware of fallen dead trees and vipers to avoid danger. The stone wall of the ward is also worth watching. At "Hojobo", you can see a beautiful curved stone wall called "musyagaeshi".
