妙国寺がある日向市細島（ほそしま）はすぐ北の港町・美々津と同じく古くから瀬戸内海の交易で栄えた港でした。妙国寺は南北朝時代の開山で、この寺が置かれた米ノ山（こめのやま）は、開山以前から神仏習合の修行地でした。この山には柱状節理の断崖に滝があり、その下には斜めに断層が露出しています。それらの天然の景観を活かしそれらと対比させるように立石群を大胆かつ繊細な配置で林立させる設えがこの庭園の最大の特徴です。長いあいだこの庭園は南北朝時代の作庭と考えられてきました。しかし、近年の発掘調査で江戸時代中期の茶碗片が出土し築庭時期を宝暦年間（1751~1762年）頃に改める説が有力となっています。確かにその観点で庭を眺めると、同じく江戸時代作庭の滋賀県「彦根城・楽々園」延宝5年（1677年）や、大分県杵築の「妙経寺庭園」安永四年(1775年）等との共通点があるように思えてきます。しかし、時代の流れの中で庭が改変されている可能性もあり南北朝時代に作庭された可能性が完全に失われた訳ではないようです。細島がある地域は古来より瀬戸内海ルートで畿内に直結していたのでこの妙国寺庭園は畿内方面の庭師による作庭の可能性も指摘されています。拝観者は庭の中に入り橋を渡って中島へ渡ることが許されています。地方の庭園ならではの自由さです。現在、池は漏水しており水が溜らなくなっています、漏水箇所を調査中とのことです。ところで、この妙国寺庭園の管理は京都の庭師さんが担当しているそうです。

However, the garden of Myokoku-ji temple is a style that is common to the garden of the Muromachi period. From the beginning, there are waterfalls and cliffs on the site, and the landscape is used to create a garden. Another characteristic of this garden is the standing stones placed rhythmically. Columnar joints waterfalls and cliffs with strong diagonal lines, and artificial ponds and standing stones, and three artificial hills covered with lawns, pond islands, and they resonate like music in harmony There is. In terms of expression as a temple garden, the three artificial hills represent the past, the present, and the future, and one island symbolizes heaven. In that sense, it is inferred that the theme of the whole garden is that the commandment is to go to heaven after death if you do good deeds in this world and to hell if you do evils.
