旧久留島氏庭園は、陣屋の丘を利用して作られた「藩主御殿庭園」「栖鳳楼 庭園」「清水御門庭園」の３つからなる。

まず「藩主御殿庭園」は池泉回遊式、巨石の庭園。重機がなかった江戸時代の石の運搬術は現代を超えていました。巨石は別の山から運ばれてきました。石碑に使われている石も昔は池の手前に置かれていた平石で舟着石でした。要所要所にこれでもかと巨石を配した豪快な大名庭園です。江戸末期の作庭なのでどこかに弱さもありつつ安土桃山時代に通じるダイナミックさも感じさせてくれます。全国的に全く知られていないので初めて訪れた庭園ファンは驚くようです。庭木がほぼ全て失われているのがいかにも残念。本来は松を中心の植栽がなされていたのではないでしょうか。昭和初期まで御殿の建物が残っていて役所として使われていたそうですが、その御殿跡は芝生の広場になっています。中途半端に公園の一角に残された庭はお世辞にもいい状態とは言えません。出来ることなら御殿を復元し総体的な庭園美を取り戻して欲しいものです。

「藩主御殿庭園」の斜面を登った丘の頂上に「栖鳳楼 庭園」があります。

「栖鳳楼」は小さな大名で城を持つことができなかった森藩が城に見立てて建てた茶室です。茶庭＝露地が付属しています。天守閣になぞらえてこの栖鳳楼が建てられたと言われています。建物は土地の段差を利用し二階にも入り口があります。二階は書院造りとなっており藩主との謁見の場に使われたそうです。一階には南北１０畳ずつの２部屋があり主に茶道や華道などに用いられました。一階と二階の間には通し柱がなく全く別の建物が上に重なる「御神楽造り」という建築スタイルとなっています。露地は背景の九重連山に合わせて蓬莱山石組を横長の連山形式で表現しています。蓬莱連山石組の東端に自然石を丸くくり抜いた日の灯籠、西端に傘のある月の灯籠を置いています。こちらの庭園も随所に巨石を配して小藩ながらも大名庭園らしいダイナミックな表現が目に付きます。白い石灰石がワンポイントになっているのは九州山口の大名庭園によく見られる設えです。天保三年／1832年の築庭。

丘の上の平地には馬場さえありました。その平地を歩き藩主御殿庭園と反対側の清水御門まで来ると、その斜面にある石垣と壕を利用した庭園が「清水御門庭園」にたどり着きます。景石を配し石橋を架け石垣から水を落としています。その真上の石垣の上には茶室がありましたが現在は手水などを残すのみとなっています。このような庭園は金沢城にもありました。旧久留島氏庭園は小さな「城＝陣屋」の遺構と一体化した複合的な景観が魅力となっています。

This is the garden which the Daimyo／大名 of the Edo period made. Daimyo is the next ranking samurai of Tokugawa shogun／徳川将軍 and ruled all over Japan. We call the garden they made "DaimyoTeien／大名庭園”. Daimyo also ranked from those who ruled the great territory to those who ruled the small territory. Kurushima／久留島 who made this garden was a small Daimyo. A small Daimyo was forbidden to have a castle, so I made Jinya／陣屋 instead. JInya is a fort that surrounds Daimyo's mansion with a moat. This garden is a garden created facing the residence of Jinya. We call it "Hansyu goten-teien／藩主御殿庭園". The residence remained until the 1920s but now it got lost and became a park. Scenery with the next contemporary park is a mismatch. I hope, someday Kusu - town rebuilds the residence and regains the beauty of this garden. The characteristic of the garden is that it has plenty of placement of the big stones exquisitely. A stone monument standing in front of the garden was originally part of the garden stone. It was laid horizontally as a stone of a docking station in front of the pond. I think it should be restored. Civil engineering technology of Japan in the Edo period is wonderful. In addition to this there are many large stones around the garden. Sadly, most of the garden trees in this garden have been lost. And the garden trees that remained since the Edo era are too big to prune. There are few such wonderful gardens with large scales, I strongly desire that the day it will regain the original appearance.

"Seihoro garden / Kyu Kurushimashi Garden" Kusu-machi, Oita-pref.

The garden of the tea room "Seihoro" of the Mori clan who ruled this small mountain town during the Edo period. Because the scale of the Mori clan was small, it was not allowed to have a castle in the Edo shogunate. The lord belonged to a castle tower and built a two-story tea room on a hill. That is "Seihoro". The garden should originally be a tea garden "Roji". However, there is a Horai stone group and a view of the mountain is borrowed there. Horai stone group is unusual "Mountain range form ".In addition Sanzonseki stone group, stone lantern basket which opened round hole etc are placed. I was amazed by the huge stepping stones. White limestone is one point. Currently the neighboring Suehiro shrine is managing Seihoro and the garden.
