「マリエール神水苑庭園」熊本県・"Mariere Shinsuien Garden" Kumamoto Pref

現在では結婚式場になっているこの庭園はおよそ300年前の江戸中期1700年頃に小堀遠州の弟子によって作庭されたと伝えられる。庭園様式は桃山式池泉回遊式庭園（マリエール神水苑・公式サイトより）。もともと江戸時代、この場所には肥後藩主細川家の御茶屋があり、近くの馬場で馬を調練した後の殿様の休息所だったと言われている。庭園は作庭された頃の面影をよく残している。この庭園の最大の特徴は豊かな澄んだ水が流れる池の美しさ。築庭時から植えられていた芭蕉の林が池にエキゾチックな趣を添えている。緑の芝生に覆われたなだらかな築山群は幾えにも稜線を重ね、池の水に劣らない美しい光景を創出している。当時のままに架かる石橋のそばの大きな石灯籠は第六代宇土藩主がこの庭に移築したもの。その野趣あふれる山灯籠風の竿の表にはこの灯籠が本来置かれていた「蕉夢庵」の文字が彫られている。実は江戸時代は空前の芭蕉ブームがおこっていた。松尾芭蕉の家の前にも芭蕉が植えられちょっとした江戸の名所になっていたとか。実はこれが松尾芭蕉の雅号の由来。神水苑を訪れた高浜虚子は池の芭蕉林を見て「縦横にみづの流れや芭蕉林」と詠んだとか。

熊本の庭園にはこの神水苑のほかにも江戸時代から引き継がれた芭蕉林が現在も多く見られる。熊本は水の都。芭蕉の生育に欠かせない澄んだ水が豊富なのだ。現マリエール神水苑に所有が移行する際、旧所有者との間で交わされた譲渡条件に「湧水池の保存や環境保全」が盛り込まれていたこともあり、湧水池は造園当時のまま保全されている。おかげで芭蕉が残った。そのほか、池にはカワニナが生息し初夏にはホタルが舞う。また、淡水小魚等も見られるのでカワセミなど多くの野鳥も捕食のため飛来。マリエール神水苑は、庭園文化を守るだけでなく都市のなかのオアシスのような自然環境の保全にも成功している。疑似西洋建築と日本庭園の組み合わせに否定的な意見を持つ人もいるかもしれないが、完璧にメンテナンスされているマリエール神水苑庭園をこの目で見ると「経済的利益を生む施設が庭園を引き継ぎ守つていく」これこそがその成功例だと思わざるを得なかった。熊本市所有の多くの庭園がひどく荒廃している。メンテせずに放置し朽ち果てさせてしまうのであれば、たとえ限られた人しか利用できなくともレストランなどに貸出し管理運営を一任し、歴史的な庭園や古い屋敷を維持し後世に伝えるたことも選択肢にいれるべきでは？と思わずにはいられなかった。マリエール神水苑庭園は同じく熊本市の水前寺成趣園に次ぐ熊本を代表する日本庭園です。レストラン等を利用して訪れることを強くお薦めします。

"Mariere Shinsuien Garden" Kumamoto Prefecture

It is said that this garden, which is now a wedding hall, was created by a disciple of Kobori Enshu about 300 years ago in the middle of the Edo period (from Marielle Shinsuien, official website). Originally in the Edo period, it is said that this place was a resting place for the lord after training horses at a nearby Baba at the site of the Higo feudal lord Hosokawa's teahouse. The garden retains the remnants of the time it was created, and conveys the gentle garden style of the mid-Edo period. The biggest feature of this garden is the beautiful pond with abundant spring water. The Basho forest planted in the garden during the Edo period adds an exotic touch to the pond. The gentle artificial hill covered with green grass overlaps the ridgeline and creates a beautiful scene comparable to the water of a transparent pond. When the ownership was transferred to Marielle Shinsuien, the transfer conditions exchanged with the former owner included "preservation of the spring pond and environmental conservation", so the spring pond is well preserved as it was at the time of landscaping. Therefore, the firefly larva Kawanina inhabits the pond, and fireflies dance on early summer nights. Since small freshwater fish are also swimming, many wild birds such as kingfishers fly in for predation, and it is an example of success not only in preserving garden culture but also in preserving the natural environment such as an oasis in the city. .. Some may have a negative opinion about the combination of pseudo-Western architecture and Japanese gardens, but I think Marielle Shinsuien's current situation is "economically profitable facilities take over and protect the gardens", a wonderful success of that theory I was convinced that it was an example.
