Yoshimine Family / Sesshu Garden" Oita Pref.

"Yoshimine Family / Sesshu Garden" Oita Pref.

Sesshu, who returned from the Ming dynasty, did not return to Kyoto due to the turmoil of the Onin War, and finally settled down in Yamaguchi under the patronage of Mr. Ouchi at the age of 43. However, before that, he was active in Mt. Hiko, a major sanctuary of Shugendo in Fukuoka Prefecture, and then he used the atelier "Tenkaitogarou", which he had near Oita City, as a base for his creative activities. This "Yoshimine family, Sesshu garden" is located along the highway connecting Mt. Hiko and Oita, and is located within the area where Sesshu actually worked. The current garden is quite different from the beginning of the garden, and it is difficult to distinguish the garden stones from the moss-covered green planting, but if you look closely, there are some features that are common to other Sesshu gardens. You will also be able to find it. First of all, you will notice that the megaliths like the shell of a turtle placed diagonally on the central slope behind the pond and the tateishi with a sharp tip are very similar to those of the former Kyu-Kameishi Garden on Mt. Hikosan. And the boat stone placed in the pond is very similar to the boat stone in Jyoei-ji Temple, Yamaguchi City. There are many gardens in western Japan that retain the tradition of "made by Sesshu", many of which are wrong. However, this "Yoshimine family, Sesshu garden" is one of the highly credible gardens created by Sesshu. The 500-year-old Kanagi-sai and Totsubaki in the garden are said to be hand-planted by Sesshu. Mirei Shigemori also visited this garden. We recommend visiting as one of the must-see gardens for Sesshu garden fans.
