「雪舟の郷記念館」島根県益田市・”Sesshu no sato kinenkan” Shimane-pref.

島根県益田市は一説によれば画聖雪舟終焉の地と言われています。いずれにせよ晩年の雪舟がこの地で暮らしたことは間違いなく、四大雪舟庭園のうち二庭が益田市に残されています。雪舟は益田の文化に大きな影響を与え、それは今なお受け継がれています。そんな益田にとってなくてはならない存在である雪舟を記念してつくられたのが「雪舟の郷記念館」です。この博物館は平成2年10月に開館してから現在まで様々な企画展を開催し、私が訪れた令和二年十一月には貴重な雪舟直筆の作品や、雪舟に学んだ「雲谷派・うんこくは」の画家たちの作品を展示した「雪舟イズム」が開催されていました。この博物館の魅力はこのような企画展はもちろんですがそれだけではありません。館内ロビーの大きなガラス窓の外には雪舟をイメージした美しい枯山水庭が広がっているのです。この庭園は開館にあわせて熊本光三氏により作庭され、雪舟筆「花鳥図屏風」をヒントに益田の名勝八景を表現したもので「八景園」と名付けられました。（熊本光三さんについては資料が見つからず経歴は不明です、分かり次第加筆します。）庭は手前の平庭の部分に白砂を敷きつめ海に見立てて砂紋を描き、苔で覆った小さな島（築山）をいくつかつくり、そこに大小の石を置き、背後の斜面に主木の楓やいかにも雪舟好みのエッジの効いた立石をいくつも配置しています。また庭と外界を分かつ竹垣も竹穂と木賊ばりを組み合わせた凝った意匠で大変美しく、城のような外観の中世寺院風の外観を持つ記念館の建物ともよく調和しています。私が訪れた日はくしくも楓の紅葉が真っ盛り。燃え立つように染まった緋色の楓が枯山水に彩りを添えていました。記念館エントランス前には紅葉のトンネルの下に続く「雪舟小径」のモミジも美しく色づいていました。ひとつだけ残念なことは、砂庭の小さな築山のアウトラインが、成長しすぎてはみだした苔が崩してしまっていること。庭師は苔の生育をきちんと制御すべきです。このまま放置すれば砂の部分がすべて苔で覆われてしまいかねません。しかしその点以外は総じて素晴らしい設えのお庭だと思いました。

"Sesshu no sato kinenkan (Sesshu Memorial Museum)" Masuda-City, Shimane-pref.

According to one theory, Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture, is the place where Sesshu died. In any case, there is no doubt that Sesshu in his later years lived here, and two of the four major Sesshu gardens are left in Masuda City. Sesshu had a great influence on Masuda's culture, and it is still inherited. In commemoration of Sesshu, which is an indispensable existence for Masuda, the "Sesshu no Sato Memorial Museum" opened in October 1990 and holds various special exhibitions. In November of the 2nd year of Reiwa, when I visited, "Sesshu Ism" was held, which exhibited valuable works by Sesshu and the works of "Unkoku school" painters who learned from Sesshu. The attraction of this Sesshu Memorial Museum is not limited to such special exhibitions. Outside the large glass window in the lobby of the museum, there is a beautiful dry landscape garden (Karesansui) that resembles a snow boat. On the day I visited, Kaede's autumn leaves were in full bloom. Kaede, which was dyed in scarlet like burning, added color to the dry landscape garden. The design of this garden is to lay white sand on the flat ground in the foreground, place moss and stones, and place the main tree Kaedeya and edgy stones that Sesshu likes on the slope behind. The bamboo fence between the garden and the outside world is also very beautiful with an elaborate design, and it is in harmony with the building of the Memorial Museum, which has a slightly castle-like appearance like a medieval temple. In front of the entrance, there is also the "Sesshu Komichi" that runs under the tunnel of autumn leaves.
