円融寺は1652年大村藩4代藩主大村純長によって建立されました。しかし明治の廃仏毀釈で廃寺となり建物はすべて消滅し、庭は草木に覆われその存在はやがて人々から忘れられていきました。昭和４４年のある日、帰省していた大村出身の東京農大の学生が斜面の石に着目し専門家に調査を依頼したことにより大規模な枯山水庭園であることが判明、やがて庭は復元され江戸初期の枯山水の貴重な作例として「旧円融寺庭園」の名称で国の名勝に指定されることになったのです。この庭園は、今は失われた円融寺の本堂と書院の庭として作られ、高さ８m 幅５０mにも及ぶ山の斜面を築山に見立て約４００個の青石＊を主材として築庭された大変スケールの大きな枯山水庭です。庭は左手の本堂側（以後本堂庭）に立石を多く配し斜面の６割以上を占めています、右手の書院側（以後書院庭）には石は少なく植栽を多く配していたようです。つまり、一つの斜面に二つの異なるタイプの庭を設える縄張りがなされているのです。まず本堂庭の正面平地に置かれた礼拝石の上に立って斜面を見てみましょう。まっすぐ見上げると最上段の中央に置かれた大きな三尊石の石組と対峙することになります。これが本堂庭の主石です。この礼拝石と三尊石の二点を結ぶ線が庭の中心軸となり、最上段の左右両端から二筋の枯流れがV字に斜面を流れ下り礼拝石の前で合流し大きな逆三角形の構図を生み出しています。林立する立石群は主にこの構図の中に秩序をもって配石されているのです。またよく見ると斜面には彫刻のような凹凸があり立石をグループ分けする縄張りがなされている事もわかってきます。さらに主石の下には雛壇のように石が並べられ仏教的世界をあわらしているようにも見えます。それを物語るように立石群の要所に幾つもの三尊石組が置かれています。右の枯流れの起点は三段落ちの枯滝になっており左右二つの枯流れともに出発点でつづら折りのようなジグザク線を描いており、ともすれば石を多用し重たくなりがちな庭に軽やかなアクセントを添えています。逆三角形構図の外側左手には上から下まで一気に斜面を流れ落ちる大きな枯滝があります。これは豪華な五段落ちの滝で五つの水落石（鏡石）には特別に白い石が使われています。このように立石が林立する本堂庭に対し、右の斜面の書院庭は立石もまばらです。よく見ると内側に凹んでいる本堂庭の左斜面に対して書院庭の右斜面は手前に丸く大きくせり出しており、前に立つと本堂庭の立石はほとんど見えないように設計されているのです。一見するとただの斜面のようですが、実は空から鳥瞰すると斜面は緩やかなS字型を描き凹凸があり、本堂庭は立石が林立する硬く厳しい世界、書院庭は植栽をメインとする柔らかで穏やかな世界に分けられているのです。知れば知るほど巧みな縄張りです。現在では書院庭の右斜面にはツツジが植えられ大小の玉ものに仕立てられていますが、本来どんな庭木が植えられどんな形状で刈り込まれていたのか想像が膨らみますね。

＊青石（緑色片岩）は中央構造線変成帯のものが有名ですが、旧円融寺庭園がある大村市からも近い長崎県西彼杵半島の周辺でも海岸に緑色片岩の転石が多く見られ、この庭の石はそこから運んだようです。東彼杵の緑色片岩は曹長石の白い層を多く含んでおり、この庭の場合は緑色よりも白い石が目立つようです。

■「旧円融寺庭園」の敷地は現在では大村護国神社・春日神社の境内となっており、庭の斜面の前に戊辰戦争で命を落とした大村藩士たちの慰霊碑が建てられています。「旧楠本正隆屋敷」から徒歩７分ほどの場所です。

A garden made on a slope with a height of 8 m and a width of 50 m. Work in 1652 at the early Edo period. A very large Karesansui／枯山水 garden with 400 Greenschists. Enyu-ji temple has disappeared now and only the garden remained. There used to be a main hall／本堂 in front of the left half of the slope, and a building of the writing building in front of the right half. Let's go to the front of the left slope first. Let's look at the garden standing on the Raihai stone／礼拝石, which has only one on the grass flat on the slope front. Then you can see that the main stone Sanzon-seki／三尊石 is placed on the top of the slope. Then you see towards you the dry streams／枯流れ flowing down the slope from the left and right above the garden. The garden is a composition of an inverted triangle. . The upstream part of the dry flow zigzags and adds a light accent to the garden. Many stones are placed along the composition of an inverted triangle. There is a dry stone waterfall／枯滝石組 on the left. A white stone is used to express water with a falling waterfall divided into five stages. Turn your eyes back into the composition of the inverted triangle again and look for another dry stone waterfall. This is a small waterfall that falls into three levels. The right side of the slope was the garden of the building of the writing room／書院. This slope consisted mainly of garden tree with few stones. Since the slope in this garden is bulging, you can not see the stone herds in the main hall garden. And since the slopes on the main hall side are dented, we can not see the garden in the writing room. Two contrasting gardens were made on the same slope and coexisted. Applaud a wonderful designer.
