Yuushien” Matsue city,Shimane pref

”Yuushien” Matsue city,Shimane pref

Yuushien cultivates and sells ginseng and peonies on Daikon Island in the Nakaumi area of Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. Cultivation of "Korean ginseng" in Shimane was started in the Edo period by Matsudaira Munenobu, the sixth feudal lord of the Matsue domain. At its peak, it was sold overseas as a luxury item under the brand name of "Unshu Ginseng" and was cultivated in multiple places within the Matsue Domain. However, at present, only Yuushien cultivates, processes and sells its products and continues to preserve the tradition of the Matsue domain's precious industrial heritage. The entrance to Yuushien is a restored Nagayamon gate of the Matsue Domain's Ginseng Office. The Ginseng Office was a public facility established by the Matsue Domain during the Edo period to manufacture, process, distribute, and sell ginseng. Peony cultivation is also very popular on Daikon Island, and women used to peddle peony seedlings and sell them nationwide. Peony is a traditional industry on Daikon Island along with ginseng. Currently, about 800,000 peony seedlings are produced annually, exports to overseas are increasing, breeding is active, and more than 500 varieties are currently cultivated.

Based on the tradition of peony garden, the garden of Yuushien started the first phase construction in 1970, and as of 2021, it has become a Chisenkai yushiki style Japanese garden of about 12,000 tsubo (40,000 square meters). It is also a Shukkeishiki style landscape (reduced-scale landscape) that imitates the landscape of Izumo, such as ponds, artificial hills and waterfalls, as well as Okuizumo's demon tongue quake, Hii River, Lake Shinji, Nakaumi rock reefs, and Mt. Daisen. You can walk around the park with a wheelchair. From late April to early May, "Chisen Botan" fills the pond with flowers picked to grow peony seedlings, early summer irises and hydrangeas, autumn leaves, as well as night illumination and projection mapping throughout the year. We are energetically holding various events and trying to attract a wide range of customers by setting up a high-class Japanese restaurant in the garden that can only be used by reserved guests.
