Ogawa Family Settshu Garden" Shimane Pref

"Ogawa Family Settshu Garden" Gotsu city, Shimane Prefecture

In Shimane Prefecture, where Sesshu spent his last years, there were several gardens left by Sesshu. Among them, the Ogawa family Settshu Garden has maintained and managed the garden only by individual efforts without relying on the administration. The Ogawa family was a former aristocratic family who descended from Kyoto to Shimane following Emperor Go-Toba after being exiled to the island of Oki, and settled in Waki, Gotsu City about 800 years ago. It is said that Sesshu, who visited Gotsu City 1460 years ago when he was in the 20th to 21st generation, stayed at the same house and built a garden. This garden was originally a mid-Muromachi garden renovated by Settshu and has an area of about 110 tsubo. It is a Chisen appreciation garden that you can see from inside the building. The building overlooking this garden was rebuilt in 2006, and the Toko pillars and Ranma are made with plenty of old materials to harmonize with the old garden made by Settshu.

The garden skillfully uses the slopes of the mountain to center the three Buddha statue stones, with a "dry waterfall" above and a "real waterfall" below, that is, two different waterfalls are skillfully connected into one. It has a big feature. Water is no longer flowing to protect the pond on the advice of Mirei Shigemori, who once visited this garden measurement survey. The outline of the waterfall is very similar to the waterfalls of Yamaguchi "Jyoei-ji" and Fukuoka "Fujie shi Gyorakuen" by Settshu. Another major feature is that the landscape of Houna Sansui is beautifully expressed like a symphony by combining many stones with a flat top surface. Placing many stones with a flat top is a characteristic of settshu's garden. The stone shaped like an eagle's beak protruding from the revetment is interesting because a stone similar to the "Old Zashuin oshimoya garden" is placed on Mt. Hiko, Fukuoka Prefecture. In 1959, it was designated as Shimane Prefecture's designated cultural property, the first scenic spot.
