"Chofu Moritei" Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture

A group of gardens in a mansion completed in 1903 by Mototoshi Mouri, the 14th head of the Chofu Mouri family.

The garden is a flat garden facing the main building's Shoin, and a dry stream flowing down from the slope of an artificial hill (artificial hill) with stones erected on the slope of a lower place to the south of the Tsukiji wall. Kresansui garden. Furthermore, on the west side of these two gardens, there is a western garden with a lawn plaza that is characteristic of the Meiji period garden, and a pond garden with a round shape like a spring where two waterfalls flow down. The autumn leaves behind this pond are beautifully colored in autumn, and butterbur flowers are in full bloom in various parts of the garden. As for the pond garden, the view from the room where Emperor Meiji stayed is the most beautiful. In addition to these four zoned but continuous gardens, there are three buildings in the south, east, and west and a courtyard surrounded by a corridor in the north. Autumn leaves and moss of the main tree, chozubachi and stepping stones are arranged in this courtyard and it is beautiful. On the north side across the corridor is Enmokuan, a tea house relocated from the Hori Gardens in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture. This tea house has an impressive copper plate-roofed gable roof, but it was originally thatched. The front entrance is not a small Nijiriguchi, but a Kininguchi where noble people can enter the tea room without bowing. The Hori family was originally a samurai family, and this tea family is a samurai style tea house. General customers cannot enter the tea room, but they can receive a set of matcha and sweets in the house (400 yen per dose as of 3rd year of Reiwa). The sweets are "Yukigoromo" from Shokindo in Shimonoseki City, which is very delicious, so I recommend it. After returning to Fukuoka, I ordered it by internet sales.
