「翠水（旧・松月亭）/企救/きく」

明治２２年に福岡県田川郡糸田町の「豊国(ほうこく)炭鉱」炭鉱主・山本貴三郎(貴族院議員)が明治２２年に建設した敷地3000坪にも及ぶ迎賓館施設に併設されていた日本庭園。敷地の2000坪が建物、1000坪が庭園であった。また当時の建物はすべてが失われたが、ニュー田川ホテル時代（現マイステイズホテルマネジメント、2019年10月リニューアル）の離れ棟で数寄屋建築「翠水（旧・松月亭）」は往時を偲ばせる唯一の日本建築。「翠水 (旧・松月亭）」の建築年代は公表されていませんが前身であるニュー田川ホテル時代に建築されたことは確実です。また、その建築様式が「近代数寄屋」であることから、昭和中期～平成の建築であることが容易に推察できます。「近代数寄屋」は第二次大戦後の昭和中期から吉田五十八や村野藤吾という両巨匠が牽引した新たな日本建築様式です。ミッドセンチュリーアートと時期が重なりますが、近代数寄屋そのものは現代も踏襲されリバイバルの時期を迎えています。それは伝統的な茶室などの様式に西洋建築的なモダニズムの考えを合体させた日本建築の洗練の極みであり近年評価が高まっているのです。後述していますが、この翠水の建築家は正式には公表されていませんが名古屋の八勝館を手がけた近代茶室建築の名手「堀口捨己」の可能性が高いと思います。近代数寄屋の概念の中でさりげない設えに徹すると同時に、天井などでは大きく遊んでもいます。翠水は鑓水にせり出すように建てられ、ジグザグに雁行するプランを持っています。それらは貴族の住居である寝殿造りや武士の住居建築である書院様式の影響をうかがわせ、ホテルの高層階から見下ろす銅板葺きの薄い屋根は数寄屋的でありながらも大変優雅な趣をたたえています。しかしながらこのはやはり伝統的な数寄屋様式がベースなのです。池の中に置かれた土台の自然石の形状に合わせて柱が接する面を削る数寄屋大工の超絶技巧の代表の一つである「光付け」も見ることもできます。

さて、この翠水はホテルの本館とは別棟の「離れ」として建てられています。棟は一つに見えますが。二つの棟に分かれており、北棟には二つの客室「玄海/げんかい」「企救/きく」、南棟は一客室「菅生/すがお」となっています。これら三つの客室は、設えにもそれぞれ個性があります。

今回は「企救/きく」を紹介します。

「企救/きく」は「玄海/げんかい」「菅生/すがお」と比較すると正統派の数寄屋の設えで奇をてらったところがありません。内部は二室にわかれ、主室である一号室の池に面した板の間は水の上にせり出し浮殿のような作りとなっており「翠水」全棟の中心の景をなしています。その座敷の床の間には琵琶床があり、面取りした四方柾目の床柱が畳のなかから立ち上がり大変凝った設えです。天井は中心を障子の照明としてその周囲を屋久杉に類する複雑な木目の天井板（根杢？）が直線的にフラットに張られ。それら天井板の境には立体的な磨き丸太の縁が打ち付けられて数寄屋色を強調するとともに平面の退屈を排除しています。この磨き丸太は障子の照明にも伸びており天井全体に連続的な統一感をもたらしています。これは近代茶室建築の権威であった堀口捨己の好み。二号室はこじんまりとした落ち着いた雰囲気で寝室に向く部屋です。奥の床の間側の天井は網代張り、手前は一段低い竿縁の落ち天井とし、その境を垂れ壁のような障子の照明が仕切っています。これもやはり堀口捨己の好み。同様の天井の設えは翠水・三棟に共通しており、翠水・三棟の設計に堀口捨己が深く関わっている可能性を示唆しています。床の間にテレビが置かれているのが大変残念。風呂は伝統的な檜風呂で落ち着いています。

The Japanese garden of this hotel was built in 1897 by Kisaburo Yamamoto (a member of the House of Representatives), the mining owner of "Hokoku Coal Mine" Tagawa-gun, Fukuoka Prefecture. Currently, the Art Hotel Group is managing and this hotel was renewed in October 2019. The New Tagawa Hotel is the old name. Sukiya style architecture "Shogetu-tei" is a small Japanese building in the New Tagawa hotel era, and it is the only Japanese architecture reminiscent of the past. The construction date of "Shogetu-tei" has not been published. However, since its architectural style is "modern Sukiya," it can be inferred to be from the mid-Showa period to the Heisei period. "Modern Sukiya" is a Japanese architectural style that occurred after WW2. It is a new Japanese architecture that combines the ideas of Western architectural modernism with the style of traditional tea rooms. It is the height of the sophistication of Japanese architecture, and Isoya Yoshida and Togo Murano are the representative architects. The architect of "Shogetu-tei" is unknown. "Shogetu-tei" is built up on the pond and looks like a floating hall. The building has a zigzag plan view. They are the influence of the architectural style "Shinden style i" of a noble residence. In addition, there is also the influence of the "Shoin style," which is the residence construction of samurai. However, its appearance is based on the plain and traditional Sukiya style. It is divided into three rooms, "Genkai", "Kiku", and "Sugao", each with its own character.

In December 2021, I stayed at "Kiku" and took a picture, so I will introduce it.

Compared to "Genkai" and "Sugao", "Kiku" has no strangeness in the orthodox Sukiya style. The interior is divided into two rooms, and the space between the boards facing the pond in Room 1, which is the main room, protrudes above the water and is made like a floating hall, forming the central view of the entire "Suisui" building. Room 1 Tokonoma is sophisticated and modern with an elaborate design. High quality wood is used casually. To the left of Tokonoma is a stand that decorates the stringed instrument Biwa. There is shoji lighting in the center of the ceiling, and a discreet but intricate wood grain board is elegantly stretched, and a wild polished log is stretched on the border of the board to add three-dimensionality to the flat ceiling. .. Room 2 has a small and calm atmosphere and is ideal for a bedroom. The ceiling on the Tokonoma side is "Ajiro", which is a sheet made by combining thin wooden boards. The bath is a traditional and finest cypress board bathtub.
