「洋々閣・ようようかく/ Vol.1 庭園」佐賀県唐津市

明治時代に創業した老舗旅館。フランスの海洋冒険家ジャック・マイヨールが定宿にしたことで知られる。１２０年以上にわたる歴史のなかで時代のニーズに即した改修を重ねており、最初の全面改修はすでに明治４５年（大正元年）に行われた。現在の旅館の姿は２０世紀末から２１世紀初頭にかけて行われた。庭園に関しても増築の際に変更され新しく作庭されたものもあれば昔から変わらないものもある。

まず洋々閣で私達が最初に出会う庭はフロントのすぐ先にある坪庭だ。大きな春日灯篭は古さを感じさせる。さらにラウンジに進むと窓の外一面の池庭がに飛び込んでくる「庭屋一如」という日本ならではの文化がここにある。ラウンジに面する庭は坪庭で、すぐ後ろは塀となっており建物に囲まれた横に長い敷地に作られている。向かって左奥の五重石塔を木の枝でわざと見え隠れさせて遠近感をつくり、その手前に滝石組を築いている。築山には中国の南画のような険しい山岳を思わせる立石群が並び、その手前を滝から流れ落ちた水が川となり旅するように右手へと流れていく。

流れは小さな石橋を超えると幅を広げ池となり、水の上を屋根付回廊が橋となり渡っている。回廊を超えた先の水面に美しい影を映す建物は「佐用姫の間」だ。この建物は数寄屋様式の茶室のような趣がある。その柱が乗る土台石をはじめ水面には大小の岩島が浮かび小さな池にダイナミックな印象を与えている。

池が終わった先で一気に空間がひらけ主庭となる。この主庭は基本的には明治期の特徴を持つ芝生の大空間で起伏は多少あるがほぼ平庭と言える。美しく整えられた樹齢２００年の黒松の木立を中心とし、降り蹲や、低い築地塀をくり抜いた場所に置かれたユニークな手水鉢など、要所要所に面白い趣向が見られる。奥のエリアには枯山水があり、白砂の枯池には石の八ツ橋が架かる。また、多くの飛び石の列が巡っていることがこの主庭の特徴で「出雲流庭園」との関連が指摘できるかもしれない。他にも延段がリズミカルで楽しい配置を見せている。この庭は特に朝が美しい。届いたばかりの新鮮な光が庭を斜めに照らすとき、朝露に濡れて輝く緑の芝生に老松がながく影をのばす。その光景は神々しくさえある。

洋々閣には館内三ヶ所に唐津焼のギャラリーがあり宿泊者は自由に鑑賞できます。もちろん気に入った器があれば購入できます。

“Yoyokaku Vol.1 Garden “ (Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture)

Yoyokaku is a long-established ryokan founded in the Meiji period. Known for being the home of French marine adventurer Jacques Mayol.

Over its 120-year history, Yoyokaku has been renovated to meet the needs of the times, and the first full-scale renovation was already completed in 1912 (Taisho 1). Since then, it has undergone renovations while preserving its old charm.

The first garden you meet in Yoyokaku is the inner garden just beyond the front desk. The large Kasuga lantern makes you feel old. If you go further into the lounge, you will see the pond garden outside the window. "Teioku Ichinyo" Here is a unique Japanese culture that the garden and the house are one.

Right behind the garden facing the lounge is a long site surrounded by buildings with a fence.

The five-storied stone pagoda on the far left is intentionally obscured by tree branches to create a sense of perspective, and in front of it is a waterfall and stone arrangement.

The artificial hill is lined with standing stones reminiscent of steep mountains in Chinese Nanga paintings, and in front of them, the water flowing down from the waterfall becomes a river and flows to the right as if traveling.

When the stream crosses a small stone bridge, it widens and becomes a pond, which expresses the sea.

It is a covered corridor bridge over the water. We can cross the pond on this corridor bridge. It's a good time.

Beyond the cloister bridge, the house that reflects a beautiful shadow on the surface of the water is “Sayohie no ma”.

This Sayohie no ma looks like a Sukiya-style tea house. The foundation stones that the pillars rest on are on the surface of the water, and in addition to them, large and small rocks float on the surface of the water, giving a dynamic impression to the small pond.

The pond is over, and when you walk on the stepping stones that line the side of the pond, the view suddenly opens up into the main garden.

This main garden is basically a large lawn space that has the characteristics of the Meiji period, and although there are some undulations, it is mostly flat. A beautifully manicured 200-year-old black pine grove is the central area of ​​the garden, and unique water basins are key points, which are rare. There is a dry landscape garden in the back area, and a stone yatsuhashi/zigzag bridge spans a dry pond with white sand.

This main garden is characterized by rows of many stepping stones, and many people may recall the Izumo style garden. Nobedan, which combines various stones, is rhythmic and fun.

This garden is especially beautiful in the morning. When the fresh light that has just arrived obliquely illuminates the garden, the old pine tree casts a long shadow on the green lawn wet with the morning dew. The sight is even divine.

※Yoyokaku has three galleries of Karatsu ware, which guests can freely appreciate. Karatsu ware has been famous for tea bowls since the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
