１９世紀末に生まれ２０世紀末まで98年間の生涯をかけて小説家・随筆家、雑誌編集者、着物デザイナー、実業家として精力的に活動した宇野千代の生家。有名な江戸時代の木造橋「錦帯橋」の近くにある。それは裕福な日本酒の醸造業を営む「宇野家」の家族の住居として建てられた家である。宇野千代はその娘として生まれ地元の高等女学校を卒業後、教員として働いた後、岩国を出るまでそこで暮らした。宇野千代は昭和４９年に朽ちかけていた生家の保存を決め修復（宇野千代没後はNPO法人が管理し有料で一般公開している）。その際、庭園も改修した。きっかけは京都の奥嵯峨にひっそりと佇む紅葉の名所で藤原定家の山荘跡「厭離庵」に感銘を受けたことによる。宇野は先祖から受け継いだ明治時代の池庭を埋め、厭離庵に倣って庭全体にモミジを植栽し地面を苔で覆った。苔の種類は「杉苔」、乾燥しやすい夏も大変美しく管理され感心させられる。宇野は庭の中心のなだらかな築山の上に骨董商で気に入って買い入れた仏頭（石）をシンボルとして据えた。（そのとき骨董商はその仏頭を売り渋ったという）石の仏頭は宇野自身交友があった骨董家・青山二郎の弟子であり同じく女流文筆家の白洲正子が好んだような鄙びた野仏の類ではない。宇野が選んだのは大変スタイリッシュで天平仏を思わせる華やかで女性的な尊顔の仏である。宇野はその仏頭に自分自身の姿を投影していたのだろう。不思議なことにかなり大きいにもかかわらず仏頭は庭に溶け込み浮いた感じはしない。またそれ以外にも鄙びた二体の小さな石の野仏、一つは幼子のような、もう一つは男性的な不動明王、が苔の中にさりげなく置かれ、紅葉だけの庭に小さなアクセントをもたらしている。景物として宗教石造物を据えるのは文化人らしい好みと言える。

庭には宇野千代が保存運活動に携わった岐阜県本巣市（旧本巣郡根尾村）にある樹齢1500年以上の彼岸桜の古木「淡墨桜」の苗木二本が植えられ現在では大木に育ち春には花を咲かせる。秋には宇野千代の誕生日１１月２８日前後には色づいたモミジが庭全体を真紅に染めあげる。春から秋にかけては「青モミジ」の緑陰が庭全体を清々しく包み込み苔の上に木漏れ日が揺れる。

It is located near the famous Edo period wooden bridge "Kintai Bridge". It was built as a residence for a wealthy family of sake brewers, the Uno family. Chiyo Uno was born as his daughter, and after graduating from a local girls' high school, she worked as a teacher and lived there until she left Iwakuni. Chiyo Uno restored this birthplace in 1974. She also renovated the gardens during that time. The impetus for her garden renovation was that she was impressed by Enrian in Arashiyama, Kyoto. Uno buried a pond garden in the Meiji period and planted maples throughout the garden, following Enrian, and covered the ground with moss. The garden is refreshing all year round surrounded by the shade of maple trees. The type of moss is cedar moss, which is managed beautifully even in the dry summer. Uno placed a Buddha head (stone) that he found at an antique dealer on top of the gently sloping hill in the center of the garden as a symbol.
