山口県萩市、上級武家屋敷が集まる伝統地区の老舗旅館「北門屋敷」を紹介します。このホテルには今上天皇陛下ご夫妻が皇太子時代ご結婚後初めての地方への御行幸で宿泊された特別室「桂月」に枯山水庭園があり、このホームページではすでに紹介しています。北門屋敷にはその他にも露天風呂付きの部屋に小さなプライベートベートガーデンがあり、それらの庭も基本的には和風庭園です。今回はその一つ「菖蒲７」の枝垂れ桜が咲く苔庭と露天風呂、そして名栗加工が施されたパネルをモダンにアレンジしたインテリアなどを紹介しています。名栗（なぐり）とは板や柱の表面に荒々しい削り跡をつけてラフな風情を楽しむ日本古来の伝統的な数寄屋建築の装飾です。最近日本ではこの名栗加工したパネルを組み合わせた和モダンのインテリアがちょっとしたブームになっています。北門屋敷の菖蒲７では性格が異なる二種類の名栗加工のパネルを組み合わせた斬新な作例が見られます。このホテルの夕食用のダイニングの窓に面して滝を中心にした日本庭園があります。この庭がある場所は本来は玄関でお客を迎える庭だったそうですが、増築やリノベーションの結果ダイニングに面することになったそうです。この庭は傾斜地に作られ京都の北山杉や紅葉などが植栽され日本の四季の風情が楽しめます。このホテルの先代経営者は欧風趣味で、ホテルのロビーにはアールヌーボーを中心とするガラスコレクションなどの素晴らしい西洋骨董・絵画が展示されています。ホテル主棟も欧風で、主庭もイングリッシュガーデンで一年中西洋種の花々が色とりどりに咲き乱れています。しかし庭の上段には日本各地の三棟の古民家から集められた古材で建てられた和館の離れ棟があり、その周辺に植栽されたソメイヨシノや枝垂れ桜そして紅葉などが和のテイストを醸し出し和洋折衷の趣となっています。今回は春と秋の風景をご紹介します。

This time, I will introduce the long-established ryokan（Inn )”Hokumon Yashiki" located in the high-class samurai residence area in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. This hotel has a dry landscape garden in the special room "Keigetsu" where Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan stayed for the first time after their wedding to visit a local area. Other rooms with open-air baths also have private gardens, and those gardens are basically Japanese-style gardens. This time, we will introduce one of them, "Shobu 7", a small garden with weeping cherry blossoms, an open-air bath, and an interior with a modern arrangement of Nguri-processed panels. Naguri is a traditional Japanese architectural decoration that enjoys a rough atmosphere by leaving rough scraping marks on the surface of boards and pillars. Recently in Japan, modern Japanese interiors that combine Naguri-processed panels are booming. There is also a Japanese garden centered on a waterfall outside the window of the hotel's dining room for dinner. This garden is built on a slope and is planted with Kyoto's Kitayama cedar and autumn leaves, so you can enjoy the taste of Japan's four seasons. However, the previous owner of this hotel had a European taste, and Western antiques and paintings such as a glass collection centered on Art Nouveau are displayed in the hotel lobby. The main building of the hotel has a European style, and the main garden is an English garden, where Western flowers are in full bloom all year round. However, somei-yoshino cherry trees, weeping cherry trees, and autumn foliage planted around the outbuildings in the style of an old Japanese rural house in the upper part of the garden create a Japanese taste.
