「安住寺」大分県・”Anju-ji temple” Oita-pref.

安住寺・大分県杵築市／Anju-ji temple・Kitsuki-city Oita-pref.

正元元年（１２５９）鎌倉時代、木付城・城主であった木付親重公の創始により京都・東福寺より聖一国師・円爾弁円大和尚を勧請し開山の式を挙げ、安住寺の｢開祖」とした。当時の安住寺は現在地とは別の八坂川を見下ろす崖の上にあり、木付氏の菩提寺として繁栄したが、木付氏の滅亡後、幾度の火災で焼失。文禄二年（１５９３）大友氏に殉じて木付氏は亡び、寺も極度に衰微した。しかし松平氏が城主を務めた時代の延宝年間（１６７３～８１）に現在地に再興。現在の本堂は平成５年（１９９３）に改築されたものである。

安住寺庭園は大正時代の築庭で、本堂・庫裡などの連結した寺の建物にコの字型に囲まれた狭い土地の一番低い場所に変形のひょうたん型を基本とした池をつくり、その中心のくびれ部分に石の反橋を架け、池を東西に二分している。池の東西南・三方の傾斜地は築山に見立てられている。明治時代の流行を踏襲した丸石を敷き詰めた「枯流れ」が南の築山の斜面を西の池に下っている。さらに西池の西端には鑓水が注ぎ込んでいるので、西池は川を表し、東池は大海を表していると思われる。築山にはツツジや皐月などのタマモノ仕立ての植栽がリズミカルに植栽され、開花すると部屋の机の天板に投影され美しい。庭園の前景には視界を遮らないように丈の低い雪見灯籠を据え、東の築山の斜面上の客殿の足元には石垣をあしらい山寺を思わせる佇まいとし大型の石灯籠なども据えている。さらに南の築山上には、後景として紅葉とその後ろに見上げるような針葉樹を立ち並べ視界を遮り、西池の枯流れと重なる南西の軸線から先の築山をなだらかにして奥行きをもたせ視界を誘導して解き放っており、なかなか巧みな構成と言える。池には鯉が元気に泳ぎ、植栽の手入れも良くなされている。

In the first year of Shogen (1259), in the Kamakura period, Chikashige Kitsuki, who was the lord of Kitsuki Castle, summoned Shoichi Kokushi from Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto and held the opening ceremony of Anju-ji Temple. At that time, Anju-ji Temple was located on a different cliff overlooking a river than the current location, and prospered as the family temple of the Kitsuki clan, but after the Kitsuki clan's downfall, it was destroyed by fire several times. In the 2nd year of Bunroku (1593), the Kitsuki clan died after being martyred by the Otomo clan, and the temple was in extreme decline. However, during the Enpo era (1673-81), when the Matsudaira clan ruled the castle, it was rebuilt at its current location. The current main hall was rebuilt in 1993.

The garden of Anju-ji Temple was built in the Taisho period (1912-1926), and the temple buildings connected to the main hall and other halls are surrounded by a U-shaped narrow square with a gourd shape at the lowest point. A basic pond is created, and a stone crossing bridge is built across the constricted part of the center, dividing the pond into east and west. The slopes on three sides of the pond, east, west, and south, are used instead of artificial hills. The ``Kare Nagare'', which is made of cobblestones that follow the fashion of the Meiji era, descends the slope of the artificial hill in the south to the pond in the west. In addition, the west end of the west pond is filled with yari water, so it is thought that the west pond represents the river and the east pond represents the ocean. On the artificial hill, azaleas and satsuki are planted in a rhythmical manner, and when they bloom, they are beautifully projected onto the polished tabletop of the desk in the room. In the foreground of the garden, a short Yukimi lantern is placed so as not to block the view, and at the foot of the reception hall on the slope of the artificial hill to the east, a stone wall is installed to create an appearance reminiscent of a mountain temple, and a large stone lantern is also installed. Furthermore, on top of the rocky hill in the south, autumn leaves and coniferous trees stand behind them to block the view. It can be said that it is a very skillful composition. Carp swim in the pond and the plants are well taken care of.
