「山口ふるさと伝承総合センター」山口県山口市

山口市大殿地区は参勤交代の大名行列が通った大殿大路を中心に職人や商人が集まり江戸時代の山口でもっとも栄えた地区だった。現在も多くの町家が残されカファなどに利用されている。そのなかでもコアとなっているのが竪小路に面してたつ木造２階建ての重厚な商家建築「旧野村家住宅」だ。この建物は１８８６年（明治１９年）に酒造商家として建てられたもので、昭和５９年には野村家より山口市に寄贈され、「山口ふるさと伝承総合センター」の伝統工芸常設展示として広く一般公開されている。この旧野村家には中庭があり、戦後作られたいかにも酒造商家のらしい酒樽を利用した茶室があり珍しい。中庭は管理があまり行き届いていないのが残念。センター内の敷地にはこの他に明治２４年（１８９１）に建てられた豪農・美祢家の150坪の居宅を三分の一の50坪に縮小して移築した周囲にも露地風の庭園がある。建物は主に茶室として使用されている。室内の設えは小堀遠州好みで武家茶道の趣が感じられる。センターの中心には古い二棟の伝統建築と調和するようデザインされた瓦葺き鉄筋コンクリートの新しい建物もあり、主に地元の主婦たちに伝統工芸などの講習会が行われ連日賑わっているが、なかには山口と佐渡ヶ島だけに残された鷺流狂言の講習会なども受講でき貴重だ。また山口の伝統工芸品が買える売店も併設されている。同センターでは旧野村酒造の残された井戸を利用して「一の坂川」のゲンジボタルの繁殖をおこなっている。

The Odono district of Yamaguchi City was the most prosperous area in Yamaguchi during the Edo period, where craftsmen and merchants gathered around Odono-oji Odori Street, where the daimyo procession of the Sankinkotai passed. Even today, many townhouses remain and are used as cafés. Among them, the core is the ``former Nomura family residence'', a two-story solid wooden merchant house facing Tatekoji Street. This merchant house was built in 1886 (Meiji 19) as a sake brewery merchant's house, and was donated to Yamaguchi City by the Nomura family in 1984. The former Nomura family has a courtyard. The garden is surrounded by walls and earthen storehouses, and has a low artificial hill in the center. In the courtyard, there is a tea room that uses sake barrels that are unique to a sake brewery merchant built after the war. The courtyard was poorly maintained when I visited. Very disappointing.

The residence of the wealthy farmer Mine family, which was built in 1891, was relocated to the site of the center after being reduced to one third. There is also an open-air garden around the building. The building is mainly used as a tea room. The interior is designed by Kobori Enshu, and you can feel the taste of samurai tea ceremony.

At the center of the center is a new tile-roofed reinforced concrete building designed to harmonize with the two old traditional buildings. You can also attend Kyogen workshops. There is also a shop where you can buy Yamaguchi's traditional crafts.
