“Jodoji temple” Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture

Jodoji is an ancient temple that is said to have been opened by Prince Shotoku in 616. The main hall and Tahoto pagoda, both buildings from the Kamakura period, have been designated as national treasures.

The garden, a nationally designated scenic spot, was built facing the Kuri and Guest Hall (important cultural property, built in 1719), and you must purchase a ticket to see it.

According to temple legend, the garden was created in 1806 by Senryu Hasegawa, the grandson of the 13th Sesshu. (However, since Sesshu, who was a Zen monk all his life, had no wife or children, it is unclear whether Senryu Hasegawa was really a descendant of Sesshu or not.)

This garden is a Tsukiyamarinsen garden with an artificial hill built on the mountainside in the background. Water used to flow from Tsukiyama, but now the water has dried up. However, during the rainy season, water collects in the long, narrow pond on the border between Tsukiyama and Hiraniwa, reviving its former appearance. There are stones on top of Tsukiyama that have Buddhist meaning, but they are now difficult to see due to the overgrowth of vegetation.

In Bunka 11, eight years after Senryu Hasegawa created the garden, the tea room "Roteki-an" was relocated to the rear left of Tsukiyama. (It is said that it was located in Fushimi Castle during the Azuchi-Momoyama period.) Therefore, the garden came to be regarded as a Roji, the garden of a tea room.

There is a sitting waiting area behind Tsukiyama that we cannot see, and that is Uchi-roji, and a row of stepping stones starting from the Ensaki water basin on the veranda of the reception hall are lined up towards it. The arrangement of the stepping stones was clearly influenced by the Izumo style, and the two ``Tanzaku-shaped'' stones, Raihai stones (Kagooki stones), have become a major addition to the garden.

There is a Hojo garden on the south side of the Guest Hall. This is a relatively new garden.
