"Meimeian" Shimane Prefecture

The tea room "Meimei-an" is a tea room related to Fumai Matsudaira. It was originally located in the main residence of the Arisawa family, who were the chief retainers of the Matsue clan during the Edo period, and was later moved to the residence of Count Matsubara in Tokyo, then moved to the residence of Count Matsudairara in Tokyo and then returned to the Arisawa family mountain lodge in Matsue City, but it was in great disrepair. Therefore, in 1966, as part of a commemorative project commemorating the 150th anniversary of Fumai Matsudaira's death, Meimei-an was relocated and restored to Akayama, Matsue City.

At that time, a new modern tea room called “Hyakuso-tei'' was built to pair with Meimei-an, and the old and new tea rooms provide a nice contrast on the plateau of Akayama. The entire facility serves as the Akayama Tea Ceremony Hall, which also includes a separate modern tea room, and has become the center of Matsue City's tea ceremony community, regardless of its style.

"Meimei-an'' was named by Fumai Matsudaira. Its origin is the Zen question and answer "Meimei Hyakusoutou

The meaning is, "The truth that Zen points to is profound and difficult, and the practices that lead to it are extremely strict and difficult to approach, but when you stand at the ultimate goal, the truth is extremely simple and seemingly ordinary."

About the garden: A Roji garden is built around Meimei-an, and an Izumo style garden is built in front of Hyakuso-tei.

First of all, as for Meimei-an/Roji, the tea room has been relocated and relocated four times, so it is unclear whether it has maintained its original appearance, but the Izumo-style stepping stones that continue from the Roji Gate, the very rare Uchi tsukubai basin under the eaves, and you can see the settings that Matsudaira Fumai liked, which is typical of Kobori Enshu.

The Izumo-style garden at Hyakuso-tei is a masterpiece of modern Izumo-style gardens, with colorful stepping stones arranged rhythmically using different types of stones such as Kimachi stones. Also, maintenance is very good. The roji, buildings, and sodegaki fences of Fukuoka City's Rakusuien Garden are so influenced by Hyakuso-tei that you could even call them copies, so if you have a chance, compare them and you'll make some fun discoveries.
