"Former Nozaki Family Residence" Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture

The Nozaki family made their fortune through salt production and new rice field development. The family enjoyed its heyday during the Tenpo to Kaei eras during the time of Nozaki Buzaemon, and the large mansion built at that time still remains today. It is open to the public. It is magnificent in scale, with a site of 3,000 tsubo (10,000 m2) and a total floor area of 1,000 tsubo (3,300 m2).

The garden is very valuable as it was owned by a Setouchi village headman in the late Edo period, and it has a main garden and a back garden.

The main garden is an open and bright dry landscape garden with azaleas as the centerpiece, and at its center is a huge "Okagoishi" (parking stone for the palanquin, the lord's vehicle), which can be said to be proof that the Nozaki family was strongly connected to the power of the Okayama domain as a village headman.

The back garden is a complete contrast, with a moist moss garden that exudes the atmosphere of a roji for a closed teahouse, and a Yama lantern and dry waterfall stone arrangement can be seen.
