「曲水の庭 ホテル 玉泉」 島根県松江市

松江市の玉泉は創業６０周年のホテル。1980年～1992年かけて順次行われたホテル棟の鉄筋コンクリート建て替えにともない整備された庭園がある。庭園は三方をホテルの建物に囲まれ背後の山の傾斜を利用して築山とし茶室を設け滝を落としている。滝から流れ出した水が遣水となり２つの枯山水の平庭を縫うように流れる。総体的な様式は平安時代に盃を遣水に浮かび流して歌を詠んだ「曲水の宴」をイメージした曲水の庭。夜になると砂庭に篝火が焚かれる。庭内には飛び石が続き自由に回遊できる。

“Kyokusui no niwa Hotel Gyokusen” Shimane pref, Matsue city

Gyokusen in Matsue City is a hotel celebrating its 60th anniversary. This hotel has a garden that was maintained as the hotel building was reconstructed with reinforced concrete from 1980 to 1992.

The garden is surrounded by the hotel building on three sides, and the other side is a tsukiyama, making use of the slope of the mountain in the background, with a tea room set up on the hillside and a waterfall cascading down. The water flowing from the waterfall becomes a stream that weaves through two dry landscape gardens.

The overall garden style is a "Kyokusui no Niwa'', which is inspired by the “Kyokusui Banquet'' of the Heian period, when sake cups were floated down a stream and poems　were composed. At night, bonfires are lit in the Karesansui.

To be frank, the garden is not well maintained. Weeds and grass have crept into the white sand, making the boundary between the grass and white sand blurry, a sign of poor management. There were also so many footprints in the sand that it was unclear when they were added. The level of garden management is exceptionally low in the garden kingdom of Shimane. It was a disappointing result as I went out with high expectations.
