“Itohara Memorial Hall” Garden, Shimane Prefecture

The Itohara family is an old family in Shimane Prefecture that has been in existence for 15 generations since the early Edo period. Currently engaged in forestry, up until the Taisho period it prospered as a company known for its ``Tatara iron making'', which originated with the ancient Tatars. Iron was one of the main industries of the Matsue clan during the Edo period, and the Okuizumo region alone produced 30% of the nation's iron production. The Itohara family served as the head of the iron masters of the Matsue domain and greatly contributed to the development of the region.

The area where the garden is located was originally a site where iron sand was mined. Construction of the garden began at the end of the Edo period and was completed 50 years later, around the middle of the Meiji period.

The garden is divided into three parts: the Izumo-style dry landscape garden in front of the shoin, the Yarimizu garden in front of the main building, where a small stream flows, and the pond garden in front of the storehouse, all of which harmonize together as one .

The biggest feature of this garden is that it is an ``Izumo style garden'' unique to Matsue. The Izumo-ryu garden is a style of dry landscape garden that is said to have been devised by Gentan Sawa, a gardener invited from Kyoto by Matsudaira Fumai, the seventh lord of the Matsue clan, and is said to have been created in the style of karesansui garden.

A long, narrow stone is placed in the center of the garden, and stepping stones are placed around it, and round millstone waste is often used as an accent.

This Izumo style garden has spread widely not only in the San'in region centered on Shimane Prefecture, but also in other regions, and examples can be seen. For example, there are stepping stones in the closed Roji in front of the tea ceremony room of Rakusuien in Fukuoka City, Kyushu region, and stepping stones in front of the pond in the Hakusaseisho Garden, which opens out to a vast view of the Adachi Museum of Art in Shimane Prefecture.
