旧報恩寺は飫肥藩主伊東家の菩提寺として江戸初期に建立された。報恩寺は明治の廃仏毀釈により廃寺となり現在は五百禩（いおし）神社となっている。その境内に報恩寺の庭園が残されている。自然の丘の麓に作られた山畔式の池泉庭園はこの飫肥地方でよく見られる形式だが、斜面に石の反り橋を三つも架けた設えは全国的にも珍しい。丘はシラスが固まった溶結凝灰岩の岩盤で高さ15mほど。三つの橋を渡った先は枯滝石組の上部で、そこに小さな祠があるようだが現在は木や落葉に遮られて見えない。この地方の庭には紙垂が立てられた神域が設けられる場合が多い。庭が作られたのは江戸時代と思われるが、大正時代この地方で活躍した庭師・田嶋万之助が大幅に改修したと伝えられ作庭時期は判然としない。庭の中心の背の高い山燈籠も大正時代に据えられたものだろう。ひょうたん型の池のくびれには大ぶりの石の反り橋があり現在も渡ることが可能。橋を渡り先の斜面に近よると３つの石橋の中央の橋の下にもう一つ別の小さな石橋のようなものが確認できる。橋は全部で５つあるようだ。現在庭の山畔は雑木に覆われているが本来の主木は蘇鉄だったと思われる。落ち葉に埋もれた庭は廃園の趣をたたえ一条の朝日に照らされた庭は幻想的でメランコリックな美しさを漂わせていた。また明治９年に建てられた五百禩（いおし）神社の社殿は堂々たる建物で見ごたえがある。合わせて鑑賞してほしい。社殿の後ろに隠れるように残された報恩寺時代の石の金剛力士像一対は廃仏毀釈の破壊を免れた貴重なもの。その奥には伊東家歴代藩主の墓所があり、飫肥が生んだ明治の外務大臣小村寿太郎の墓もここにある。

Houon-ji temple was founded in the early Edo period as Obi's Daimyo · Ito's temple. It is inferred that the garden was also made in the Edo period. However, Houon-ji temple disappeared in the Meiji era, and now it is a shrine. Houon-ji garden is left in the precinct. The garden of the pond made at the foot of the natural hill is a popular form in the southern Kyushu region. However, the garden with three stone bridges on the slope of the hill is very rare. The top of the three bridges is the top of the dry waterfall stone composition, where there is a small shrine. But now it is blocked by trees and can not be seen. A god area is always established in this rural garden. It is said that there was a large restoration of the garden in Taisho era. In the forgotten garden there is a unique nostalgic beauty.
