「旧湯川家屋敷」山口県萩市

旧湯川家屋敷は萩６代藩主が開削した運河「藍場川」沿いにたち、江戸時代の萩の武家屋敷の水の利用の実例を今に伝えて大変興味深い。藍場川の水はまず屋敷内に引き入れられ流水式の池泉庭園となり、次に風呂場や台所の家庭用水として使われ、再び藍場川に戻されるという実に環境に煩慮したシステムとなっていた。藍場川沿いの邸には水辺に降りて取水や野菜洗いや洗濯などの作業ができるハトバが作られいつでも水を利用することができた。また旧湯川家屋敷の池泉庭園のように藍場川沿いの多くの邸で池泉庭園が作られ、藍場川は萩の庭園文化に大いに貢献したと言える。また旧湯川家屋敷には茶室もあり萩に根付いていた豊かな茶の湯の文化を知ることもできる。

"Former Yukawa Residence", Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture

The former Yukawa Residence stands along the Aiba River, a canal excavated by the 6th feudal lord of Hagi, and is very interesting as it conveys the actual use of water in the samurai residences of Hagi during the Edo period. The water from the Aiba River was first drawn into the residences and used to create a flowing pond garden, then used as household water for the bathroom and kitchen, and then returned to the Aiba River, making it a very environmentally friendly system. Houses along the Aiba River had hatobaba, where people could go down to the water's edge to draw water and do tasks such as washing vegetables and doing laundry, so they could use the water at any time. In addition, many houses along the Aiba River had pond gardens, such as the pond garden of the former Yukawa Residence, and it can be said that the Aiba River contributed greatly to Hagi's garden culture.
