「須恵町運動公園若杉の森 沈床庭園 」 福岡県糟屋郡須恵町

須恵町運動公園若杉の森に沈床庭園があります。この公園がある場所は江戸時代からため池があり、それら貯水池として守りながら総合運動公園が作られています。沈床庭園とは一般的に沈床園・サンクンガーデンと呼ばれる地盤より低い位置に造られた半地下の庭園のことで、主に西洋式庭園として捉えられる場合が多く主な作例はイギリスなどにあります。また近代都市においても　ビルの半地下空間に庭園や広場を設ける例がしばしば見られますが、それらもサンクンガーデンと呼んでいます。しかし日本庭園でも庭が鑑賞する位置より低い場所に設えられているものを沈床園と呼んでおり福岡市の「妙福寺庭園」（江戸時代作庭）に作例があります。須恵町の沈床庭園も西洋的でありながら全体の設えは和風でもあり、ここで紹介することとしました。

There is a sunken garden in Wakasugi Forest, Suemachi Sports Park. The site of this park has had a reservoir since the Edo period, and the comprehensive sports park was built while protecting it as a reservoir. Sunken gardens are generally called sunken gardens or semi-underground gardens built below the ground level, and are often considered Western-style gardens, with the main examples being found in England and other countries. In modern cities, there are also many examples of gardens and plazas built in the semi-underground space of buildings, which are also called sunken gardens. However, Japanese gardens that are built lower than the viewing position are also called sunken gardens, and there is an example in the Myofukuji Garden in Fukuoka City (built in the Edo period). The sunken garden in Suemachi is Western-style, but the overall layout is also Japanese-style, so we decided to introduce it here.
