山口市「松田屋ホテル」の庭はアメリカの日本庭園専門誌”Sukiya Living” 潮騒プロジェクトで毎年高く評価されている、この庭はプロの庭師たちによるメンテナンスで常に最高の状態に保たれいつ訪れても美しい。ところであなたは松田屋ホテルにもう一つの庭があることをご存知だろうか。

かって松田屋ホテルの隣に「瓦屋」という旅館があった。山口は日本の鎖国を終了させ封建国家から近代国家へと転換させた明治維新の偉人たちを多く輩出した土地。松田屋と瓦屋には多くの明治の偉人たちが宿泊していた。だが惜しいことに瓦屋は廃業してしまったのだ。

その後、瓦屋の建物は跡形も無く壊され、栄屋という鉄筋コンクリートの別のホテルが建てられた。やがてそれも１０年ほど前に廃業、そして現在、その跡地は松田屋に買い取られ更地となり駐車場として使われている。実はその際、松田屋は駐車場の一画に、あるものを残した。それは庭である。実は瓦屋の次の栄屋の時代も瓦屋の庭だけは残されていたのだ。瓦屋の庭は１８世紀後期から１９世紀前半頃に作庭されたと専門家は考えている。松田屋は瓦屋に敬意を表しその歴史的な庭を残し管理を引き継いだのだ。

2019年、松田屋ホテルはこの庭に面して大浴場を建設した。古い蔵を移築して浴場とし、大きな窓を開け風呂から庭を眺められるようにしたのだ。瓦屋の庭は再び多くの人々に愛され第二章を歩み始めたのである。

There used to be an inn called "Kawaraya" next to Matsudaya Hotel. Yamaguchi is a land that produced many great people of the Meiji Restoration, which ended Japan's isolation and transformed it from a feudal state to a modern one. Many great people of the Meiji era stayed at Matsudaya and Kawaraya. But unfortunately Kawaraya went out of business.

After that, the Kawaraya building was demolished without a trace, and another reinforced concrete hotel called Sakaeya ​​was built. Eventually, that also went out of business about 10 years ago, and now the site was purchased by Matsudaya, vacant, and used as a parking lot. In fact, at that time, Matsudaya left something behind in a corner of the parking lot. That was the garden. In fact, Kawaraya's garden was the only part that remained even during the time of Sakaeya, the successor to Kawaraya. Experts believe that Kawaraya's garden was created between the late 18th century and the early 19th century. Matsudaya paid tribute to Kawaraya by preserving the historic garden and taking over its management.

In 2019, Matsudaya Hotel built a large bath facing the garden. An old storehouse was relocated and used as a bathhouse, with large windows that allow guests to view the garden from the bath. Kawaraya's garden has once again been loved by many people and has begun its second chapter.
