"Manpuku-ji Temple" Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture
Manpuku-ji Temple is an ancient temple founded in the Heian period. In 1374, the 11th lord of Masuda Nanao Castle moved it to its current location, renamed it Manpuku-ji Temple, and designated it as the family temple of the Masuda family. The main hall was built during the Nanboku-cho period and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. The garden created by Sesshu during the Muromachi period also remains. It expresses the Buddhist worldview of Mount Sumeru. The dry waterfall stonework, which is in the shadow of the ginkgo trees and other plantings on the right side of the pond, exudes a decadent aesthetic that could be described as manneristic, unique to Sesshu.
