「旧田代家住宅 」 福岡県朝倉市秋月

秋月黒田藩の上級武士の屋敷。屋敷内に上がることは出来ませんが、庭は自由に散策出来ます。屋敷南側の表座敷に面して主庭があります。この主庭は平庭の枯山水様式で、庭の中央に飛び石が配置され、背面の土塀側に立石の石組みが置かれています。現在は木の枝や幹に隠されどのような石組があるのかよく確認出来ません。北側の奥座敷に面しては裏庭があります。こちらは背景の山の斜面を利用した高低差のある庭です。土蔵入口の前には三尊石の石組があります。全部で四石ありますが、左の石は何かを置いていた台石ではないでしょうか。庭の中心に一つだけ置かれた黒い石はゴジラの頭部のようで一際強い存在感を放っています。一段高い場所にある稲荷社に続く緩やかなスロープの上に配された飛び石と、そのそばに置かれた素朴な黒い石の山灯籠の組み合わせが良い雰囲気です。稲荷社の土台は素朴な小端積みで、同じく背面に築かれている石垣も小端積みとなっており、この庭の重要なアクセントになっています。表庭と対照的にこの裏庭は総じて庭木が少なく枯山水的な雰囲気ですが、当初からそうなのかは不明です。ひょっとしたらサツキなどの低木が石組や飛び石の側に植えられていたかもしれません。現在この裏庭には梅と椿の古木が一本ずつ立っています。乾いた砂地の上に小ぶりの八重椿の花（乙女椿？）が一輪落ちていました。この二庭の他に壺庭の遺構が残されていますが、これは江戸から昭和期にかけて実際に田代家の方々がお住まいだった頃に増築された建物に付随していた中庭の名残です。現在屋敷は江戸時代の姿に戻され昭和の増築部は完全に取り除かれています。旧田代家住宅・庭園は江戸末期における地方上級武士の屋敷の庭園として貴重な作例です。

"Former Tashiro Family Residence" Akizuki, Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture

This was the residence of a high-ranking samurai of the Akizuki Kuroda Clan. You cannot enter the residence, but you can freely stroll through the garden. Facing the main garden on the south side of the residence is the main garden. This garden is a flat garden in the dry landscape style, with stepping stones placed in the center and standing stones placed on the earthen wall at the back. Currently, it is hidden by tree branches and trunks, so it is difficult to see what kind of stonework there is.

Facing the inner room on the north side is the back garden. This is a garden with a difference in height that makes use of the slope of the mountain in the background. There is a standing stone in front of the storehouse entrance. The combination of the stepping stones placed on the gentle slope leading to the Inari shrine on a higher level and the simple black stone lantern placed next to it creates a nice atmosphere. In contrast to the front garden, this back garden has few trees overall and has a dry landscape style atmosphere. There is one old plum tree and one old camellia tree in this back garden. In addition to these two gardens, there are remains of a urn garden, which is a remnant of a courtyard that was attached to a building that was expanded when the Tashiro family actually lived there from the Edo to Showa periods. Currently, the house has been restored to its Edo period appearance, and the Showa expansion has been completely removed. The former Tashiro family residence and garden is a valuable example of a garden for a high-ranking local samurai's residence at the end of the Edo period.
