「武家蔵（旧新宮家）」熊本県 / “ Bukegura " Kumamoto pref

令和２年７月、熊本県人吉市を豪雨が襲い広範囲にかけて未曾有の洪水被害が発生しました。それ以前までは「人吉市 お庭ご覧」というオープンガーデンコースが定着し人吉市内の様々な日本庭園が私達庭園ファンや観光客に公開されていました。しかし洪水により多くの庭が洪水で泥に埋もれ「お庭ご覧」も中止となり現在まで再開されていません。洪水被害から免れた庭、復旧した庭、もしくはそのまま失われてしまった庭もあるかもしれません。実情は不明ですが洪水以前まで「お庭ご覧」で公開されていた在りし日の庭園の写真を資料としてここに投稿します。

「武家蔵（旧新宮家）」熊本県人吉市

相良藩の家老を勤めた新宮家の屋敷跡。正面に立つ「堀合門」は人吉城から、敷地内にある茅葺屋根の屋敷は相良氏が休憩所にしていた建物をそれぞれ移築したもの。西南戦争の際には西郷隆盛の宿舎としても使用された。

庭園は江戸末期の作庭。京都から下向した庭師による池泉回遊式庭園。肥後の庭園文化にならい細川藩の水前寺成趣園と同じく富士に見立てた築山があるのが印象的。九州では富士山に見立てた築山が多く見られる。また屋敷から庭を望むすぐ左に大きな枝垂れ梅が植えられており人吉藩の家紋の梅花にちなんでいる。庭内の手水鉢にも梅花の浮き彫りがある。表玄関横から主庭に至る導線の右手に大立石の石庭があるが建物に窓がなく違和感がある。それは西南戦争で元の屋敷が焼失し、後に別の場所から江戸時代の武家屋敷が移築されことによる。この屋敷を所有した旧新宮家は西郷隆盛をここでかくまっていた。築庭当初は遠くの山並みを借景していたが現在では中学校の体育館が建ち景色は遮断されている。

“ Bukegura " Hitoyoshi city ,Kumamoto pref

In July 2020, heavy rains hit Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, causing unprecedented flood damage over a wide area. Prior to this, an open garden course called "Hitoyoshi City Garden Viewing" was established, and various Japanese gardens in Hitoyoshi City were open to garden enthusiasts and tourists. However, many gardens were buried in mud due to the flood, and "Garden Viewing" was canceled and has not resumed to this day. Some gardens may have escaped the flood damage, been restored, or simply lost. The actual situation is unknown, but here are some photos of the gardens that were open to the public on "Garden Viewing" before the flood as a reference.

A garden made in the Edo period. It was made by a gardener who came to Hitoyoshi from Kyoto. It is made in a style that respects Kumamoto's leading garden "SuizenjiJoju-en", that is why there is a mountain of Mt. Fuji. It is a small garden but ChisenKaiyu-shiki teien. The house is a little samurai residence in the Edo period. The main garden tree in the garden is pine. However, in order to see the garden indoors, big prickly plums are planted on the left side of the window. The plum tree is a family crest of Hitoyoshi. Water basin in the garden also has plum blossoms. There is a mysterious shaped stone beside the window of the residence to enjoy the strange rock.
