「永国寺」 熊本県人吉市

1408年、相良藩第九代藩主相楽前続により創立された曹洞宗の寺院。西南の役の折には、西郷隆盛が本営を置き、33日間在陣した。庭園は湧水をもちいた池泉庭園で背景の蓬莱山を借景とし池の向こう岸に直線的な出島（半島）を設えることによって奥行きをアクセントをもたらしている。春にはツツジ、夏は睡蓮、秋は紅葉、更に雪見灯籠の冬を加えて四季を取り揃え折々の鮮やかな世界を見ることができる。この永国寺は寺宝に初代実底和尚が描いたという幽霊の掛け軸があるが、幽霊は池に現れたということで池泉庭園は幽霊池として有名になっている。夏には永国寺幽霊まつりが開催される。

"Eikokuji Temple" Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture

A Soto Zen temple founded in 1408 by the ninth lord of the Sagara clan. During the Seinan War, Saigo Takamori set up his headquarters here and stayed there for 33 days. The garden is a spring-fed pond garden with Mount Horai in the background, and a linear Dejima (peninsula) on the opposite bank of the pond adds depth. You can see a vibrant world of the four seasons, with azaleas in spring, water lilies in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snow-viewing lanterns in winter. Eikokuji Temple's temple treasures include a hanging scroll of a ghost that is said to have been painted by the first monk Jitsudoko, and the pond garden is famous as a ghost pond because the ghost appeared in the pond. In summer, the Eikokuji Temple Ghost Festival is held.
