"Yoshino Ryokan" Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture
This garden was built in the residence of the Ando family, the official physician of the Hitoyoshi domain. It is currently the courtyard of Yoshino Ryokan, which was founded in 1909. It is a pond garden with a waterfall at the back of the pond. A large Kito stone with its head rising above the water surface, and a crane stone arrangement with its wings raised at the foot of the artificial hill behind it, are placed in a Horai garden to celebrate good fortune. The artificial hill on top of a giant turtle represents Mount Horai, and two shrines are lined up on the middle slope, and the garden is also a place to worship them from afar, with the cycads replacing flowers offered to the shrines. In addition, the location has a river flowing to the east, so placing the turtle to the north is an arrangement that follows feng shui and aligns the four gods. Legend has it that, like the Hitoyoshi Castle Palace Ruins Garden and the Former Shingu Family Garden, the garden was created by a gardener who came down from Kyoto, making it a garden that tells the story of Hitoyoshi's samurai culture.
(The writing of landscape designer Kanji Nomura is so beautiful that I've reproduced it here as is.)
*The building of Yoshino Ryokan is designated as a nationally registered tangible cultural property. It was damaged in the heavy rains in Hitoyoshi City in July 2020, but was rebuilt and reopened in 2022.
