「楞厳寺」 山口県周南市

永正年間（1504-21）に創建されたと伝えられる曹洞宗のお寺。

寺宝として、純金で造られた像高4.29cmの「金造菩薩形坐像（きんぞうぼさつぎょうざぞう）」が所蔵されています。黄金仏は、嘉永6年（1853）に、松田好松という村人が楞厳寺裏山で土中から発見し、寺に奉納されたもので、出土の経緯を記した記録や出土した地点も残っており、昭和62年県指定文化財に指定されました。

楞厳寺の山門をくぐると、黄金仏が出土したことに由来する観音岳への登山道が整備されており、道中には四国八十八カ所の分霊場や奇岩があったりと、変化に富んだハイキングコースとなっています。また本堂の裏手に小さな池泉庭園がありますので訪れたら是非見学してください。

“Ryogon-ji Temple” Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture

This temple is said to have been founded in the Eisho era (1504-21) and is a Soto Zen temple.

The temple treasure is the 4.29cm tall "Golden Seated Bodhisattva Statue" made of pure gold. The golden Buddha was discovered buried in the ground in the mountains behind the temple by villagers in 1853 and donated to the temple. Records of the excavation and the location of the discovery remain, and the temple was designated a prefectural cultural property in 1987.

Going through the temple gate of Ryogon-ji Temple, you will find a well-maintained hiking trail to Mt. Kannon, where the golden Buddha was discovered, and it is a varied hiking course. There is also a small pond garden behind the main hall, so be sure to check it out when you visit.
