「龍泉寺」 佐賀県唐津市

肥前名護屋の龍泉寺は曹洞宗のお寺で、名護屋港を見下ろす高台にある。本堂裏手に池泉回遊式庭園があり、寺伝によれば豊臣秀吉の朝鮮出兵の際に、御伽衆として仕えた曽呂利新左衛門が造った庭園となっている。庭のグランドデザインは室町時代などの古い時代の様式を踏襲しており、池の背後の山畔を築山として利用している。斜面には主木としてソテツを植栽している。蘇鉄は安土桃山時代から江戸時代にかけてエキゾチックな南国の庭木として流行した。

Ryusenji Temple in Nagoya, Hizen, is a Soto Zen temple located on a hill overlooking Nagoya Port. Behind the main hall is a stroll-style garden with a pond. According to temple legend, the garden was created by Sorori Shinzaemon, who served as a member of the Otogishu during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea. The garden's grand design follows the style of ancient times such as the Muromachi period, and the mountainside behind the pond is used as an artificial hill. Cycads are planted as the main trees on the slope. Cycads were popular as exotic tropical garden trees from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the Edo period.
