The Castle Town Saiki / Kunikida Doppo Hall ” Oita-pref

”The Castle Town Saiki / Kunikida Doppo Hall ” Saiki-city Oita-pref

Doppo Kunikida has lived in Saiki since 1839 to work as an English and math teacher at a school in Saiki. At that time, I was staying at the house of Mr. Sakamoto, the principal of the school I was assigned to. Saiki City was renovated from its mansion and opened in 2003 as "Kunikita Dohokan". The building is a villa "Mihama Goten" built by Takayasu Mouri, the 11th feudal lord of Saeki Clan in 1839, and was relocated to the present location in 1870 (Meiji 3) to serve Saeki Clan. It became the residence of the Sakamoto family, which was a family of high-ranking samurai. Therefore, although it was built in the Edo period, the fashion of the Meiji era was recognized on the clay walls, and the second floor where Doppo Kunikida stayed was expanded at the time of relocation and was built in the Meiji era. In addition, the room used as a Buddhist altar is set up in a Sukiya style, and there is a shoji sliding door with a wainscot on the veranda, which seems to have originally been a tea room. Retrofit? The adorable appearance of the now extinct Japanese squirrel, which is decorated with a sculpture on the Buddhist altar, is impressive. In addition, this column is also very elegant with a transparent fabric pasted like the patterned lace seen in the top bag of Katsura Imperial Villa. There are many unique things in the "nail hiding" in each room, and the fun is endless.

It is unknown when the front garden was created. It may have been maintained recently. But there are also elements of the old age. For example, the most striking element of this garden is the wild stone lantern, which has no space to light. It is unique and has a strong presence only in this garden. It is likely that it was moved there along with the villa architecture of the feudal lord of the Edo period. The main tree, pine, is calculated and planted from inside the house so that it can be viewed as the main character in the frame garden. The pine tree has a dignified dignity that is typical of a samurai family. The backyard was already built around the first year of the Meiji era, and it is three-dimensionally constructed by taking advantage of the topography of the back mountain, and many round pruned azaleas are planted on the slope. Water lilies are planted in the pond that collects the spring water that seeps from the mountainside. The Basho tree near the well is a fashion in the Edo period. The backyard is unpretentious and has a sense of life, giving it a gentle atmosphere.
