「清爽園」熊本県・”Seisoen”Kumamoto-pref

熊本城の西の入口で、九州各地へ通じる街道の起点であった「新一丁目御門」跡に明治時代に作られた庭園。初期の庭園化は西南戦争の戦没者を慰霊する記念碑の建立のためにおこなわれ、その後、本格的な庭園として整備すべく歩兵第11師団長であった乃木希典により寄付が呼びかけられ、細川家「御花畠」屋敷にあった庭園「陽春庭」の庭石を譲り受け庭園の再整備がなされた。「熊本城・城山の傾斜を活かし渓流に見立てた鑓水をつくり途中の滝石組を経て最後は一番下の石橋を架けた池へ水を流す地割りとしている。黄河の上流、龍門瀑・登竜門、やがて下流となり最後に海へと至る壮大な景観に見立てたものと思われる。この庭はその後しばらくして荒廃したが1929年に地元の人々の努力により蘇り当時の第八代熊本市長により「清爽園」と命名され現在もその美観を保持している。

「御花畠」は熊本城下の坪井川左岸に加藤清正によって遊興を楽しむための庭園付きの屋敷として慶長十五年（1610年）に完成し、その後は細川家が引き継ぎ熊本城・本丸御殿が不便という理由で「御花畠」を常の御殿として屋敷の改修や増築そして庭園の整備を繰り返しながら国許屋敷として幕末まで使われ続けていた。熊本城を臨む広大な規模を誇る池泉回遊式庭園「陽春庭」こそが肥後藩の大名庭園だったと言える。絵師「杉谷行直」（１７９０～１８４５）が描いた「陽春庭中之図」から、それが京都の桂離宮にもひけをとらない庭園であったことがわかる。現在その場所は「花畑公園」および市街地となっている。惜しいことに庭園は失われたが「清爽園」に残された庭石の一部から往時を偲ぶことが出来るだけでも幸いと言うべきか。なかでも遣水と池を分かつ見事な滝石組は「陽春庭」の完成度が高い品格ある庭園美を今に伝えている。石組はとても存在感が強いが実は側面から見ると薄い石であることがわかる。この技法は九州では室町期〜江戸初期に作られた武家の池泉庭園でよく見られる。

"Seisoen" Kumamoto-pref

At the west entrance of Kumamoto Castle, a garden built in the Meiji era at the site of "Shin 1-chome Gomon", which was the starting point of the highways leading to various places. The initial gardening was done to build a memorial to the war dead of the Satsuma Rebellion, and then a donation was called for by Maresuke Nogi, the 11th Infantry Division Commander at the time, to maintain it as a full-scale garden. The garden stones of the garden "Yoshuntei” in the Hosokawa family "Ohanabatake" mansion were taken over and the garden was redeveloped. "Using the slopes of Kumamoto Castle, gardener　created a stream that resembled a mountain stream and made a grand design that leads to a pond with a stone bridge through the waterfall stone group on the way. It was named "Seisoen" by the 8th mayor of Kumamoto at the time of the resurrection, and still retains its aesthetic appearance.

"Ohanabatake" was completed in 1610 as a mansion with a garden for enjoying entertainment by Kiyomasa Kato on the left bank of the Tsuboi River under Kumamoto Castle. Because of the inconvenience, the Hosokawa family continued to use "Ohanabatake” as their own residence until the end of the Edo period, repeating the renovation and extension of the mansion and the maintenance of the garden. It can be said that the Chisenkaiyushiki garden "Yoshuntei”, which boasts a vast scale overlooking Kumamoto Castle, was the Daimyo Garden of the Higo Domain. A tea room was also built in the garden. The place is now "Hanahata Park". Unfortunately, the garden itself has been lost, but it should be said that it is fortunate to be able to remember the past from some of the garden stones left in the "Seisoen”. Among them, Takiishigumi, which divides the mountain stream and the pond, conveys the dignified beauty of the garden of "Yoshuntei”Garden.
