「柳屋」熊本県八代市日奈久温泉・"Yanagiya inn” Kumamoto Pref

熊本県八代市の南部にある日奈久温泉はかって大変賑わい、九州においては雲仙のように東南アジアに居住していた西洋人が訪れるほど国際的な保養地でした。また山頭火も訪れ俳句を残しています。現在この日奈久に残る「柳屋」はじめ「金波楼」など贅を凝らした旅館は、かっての黄金時代を偲ばせてくれます。明治〜大正〜昭和初期は日本の大工の技術が頂点を迎え、本来は質素な侘び寂びを追求したはずの数寄屋建築・なかでも料亭や旅館では、客を喜ばせるためにあらゆる技術と発想で装飾を駆使する「数寄屋バロック」の時代を迎えていたのです。特に昭和初期はその頂点で、大広間の欄間は松や鶴の絢爛豪華な彫り物で飾られ、格天井や網代天井はもちろん超絶技巧を駆使し、書院窓には網干をはじめ精緻な組子の技法で様々な情景を紡いでいます。まさしくこの旅館は一度失われたら取り戻すことが出来ないかけがえのない宝であり、私達日本人が未来に残すべき日本の建築文化・日本の大工の技の結晶です。残念ながら庭園はほとんど残されておらず、また2016年に起こった熊本地震の被害からまだ完全に立ち直っていませんが、ぜひ皆さんもこの柳家に滞在してその空間に身をおき、その素晴らしさを実感していただきたいと思います。

The Meiji-Taisho-Early Showa period was an era when Japanese carpentry techniques were at their peak, and Sukiya architecture, which should have pursued a simple WAbi Sabi, entered the era of "Sukiya Baroque", which makes full use of decoration with all techniques and ideas. I was greeted. Especially in the early Showa period, it was at its peak. The architecture of this Yanagiya inn is full of stunning settings. This inn is the culmination of Japanese carpentry skills that should be preserved in the future. Unfortunately, there are few gardens left, and we haven't completely recovered from the damage caused by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, but we hope you will stay and experience the wonderfulness of this wonderful space.
