室町時代、明朝への遊学から帰国した雪舟は福岡県糸島市付近に上陸。しかし応仁の乱で京都へ帰れなくなり九州内の有力者を頼って点々とし福岡県川崎町の藤江氏の元に滞在した後に福岡県と大分県の境にまたがる神仏習合の修行地「英彦山」に3年ほど滞在したのではないかと言われています。明治の廃仏毀釈で英彦山神宮を残すのみとなった現在では想像もつきませんが、当時の英彦山は標高1.200mにもなる山の斜面にひな壇状の狭い土地が石垣で築かれ大勢の山伏たちが暮らす宿坊が立ち並んでいました。言い伝えではその数３８００。その多くに茶室や庭がありました。また座主に皇族を迎え英彦山は修験道の一大聖地として隆盛を極めていたのです。その英彦山滞在中に雪舟は３つの庭を作ったと伝承されていますが、なかでも雪舟作で間違い無いと言われるのがこの「旧亀石坊庭園」です。亀石坊は座主の代理もつとめた上位の坊でしたが現在ではその建物は失われ庭園のみが残されています。現在でも亀石坊を営んだ家系の子孫がこの庭園を管理所有し常時無料で一般に公開しています。この庭園は池泉鑑賞式庭園で背後の山の斜面を築山として利用し枯滝石組を配し、そのふもとに池を掘り、護岸には一石一石存在感のあるエッジの効いた箱型の石を中心に吟味して据え、向こう岸の斜面には亀の甲羅のような形の巨石が置かれ圧巻です。その先端の池中に蓬莱島とおぼしき尖った石を立て、その蓬莱島の一点に向かって周囲のすべての石が立体的にX字型に集中するフォーカルポイントを設けています。見学の際は是非ともこのポイントを見つけて下さい。他の庭園サイトでこの旧亀石坊庭園の印象が曖昧であるなどの低評価なコメントをつけている庭園愛好家の多くはこの重要なポイントを見落としています。この立体的なX字型の構図は重森三玲にも大きな影響を与えています。このポイントを探すときのコツは昔の人の身長を考慮して少ししゃがむことです。本庭は、島根県益田市の「医光寺」「万福寺」、山口県山口市の「常栄寺」と並び「雪舟四大庭園」に数えられています。

During the Muromachi period, Sesshu, who returned from studying abroad in the Ming Dynasty, landed near Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture. However, due to the Onin War, he could not return to Kyoto, and after staying with Mr. Fujie in Kawasaki Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, relying on influential people in Kyushu, he became a major sacred place for Shinto and Buddhist training that straddles the border between Fukuoka and Oita prefectures, "Mt. Hiko". It is said that he may have stayed at "" for about three years. At that time, Mt. Hiko was lined with "Shukubo" temples where Yambushi stayed, with stone walls in the shape of dolls lined up on the slope of the mountain at an altitude of 1.200 m.According to the tradition, the number of shukubo was 3,800, and many of them had tea rooms and gardens, and they were extremely prosperous, with the royal family as the lord. It is said that Sesshu made three gardens during his stay at Mt. Hiko, and it is said that his work is definitely the "Kyu-Kameishibo Garden". Today, the building of Bo is lost and only the garden is left, but the descendants of the family who ran Kameishibo manage and own the garden and are always open to the public for free. This garden is a pond-viewing garden.Using the slope of the mountain behind as an artificial hill, a dry waterfall stone set is arranged, a pond is dug at the foot of the pond, and a box-shaped stone with an edge that has a strong presence is carefully placed on the revetment. On the slope of the revetment, there is a huge stone shaped like a turtle shell, and a pointed stone that seems to be Horaijima is erected in the pond at the tip of Dejima, and all the surrounding stones are X toward one point of Horaijima. We have set up focal points to concentrate on the shape. Please find this viewpoint when you visit. It will be easier to find if you crouch a little considering the height of the old person. The main garden is counted as one of the "Sesshu Four Great Gardens" along with "Ikoji" and "Manpukuji" in Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture, and "Joei Temple" in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
