「蓬莱園 庭園」大分県・”Horaikan garden” Oita-pref

「蓬莱園」との名称でカフェとして営業している場所には、かっては「蓬莱観」という大分県屈指の劇場がありました。別府からも客足が絶えないほどの人気を誇り多くの一流芸能人がその舞台に立ち連日華やかに賑わっていました。現在も東海林太郎が公演した際のピアノが残されています。劇場を作ったのは現カフェオーナーの叔父で大変な数寄者でした。建物に品格高い先端が反り上がった「刎ね高欄」を設え、庭や建築を作る際には桂離宮が参考にされたそうです。その一方、劇場というエンターテインメント性も追求し、当時の庭の写真には池に浮かぶ茶室や一本柱が茅葺屋根を支える待合などが写っており、劇場を訪れた客をアッと言わせ楽しませる様々な設えが庭にあったことがわかります。残念なことにそれらは戦時中の強制疎開の取り壊しや老朽化により「失われましたが、現在残されている建物だけでも十分その素晴らしさは伝わってきます。また今までは水は枯れていますが池泉回遊式の庭園には当時としては珍しかった花菖蒲が植えられ雅な雰囲気だったそうです。春には楊貴妃と呼ばれる桜が咲きカフェの窓からのぞむ庭の景色は華麗な屏風のようになります。隣接するの中津城や中津市立博物館を訪れた際にランチや喫茶での利用をお勧めします。ランチのカレーは大変な美味しくお勧めです。

"Horaien garden" Nakatsu-city Oita prefecture

In the place where the cafe "Horaien" is currently open, there used to be one of the best theaters in Oita prefecture called "Horaikan". It is said that many top-class entertainers have stood on the stage, boasting an ever-popular popularity from Beppu. Even now, the piano from the performance by Taro Shoji is left there.

The theater was built by the uncle of the current cafe owner and a great lover of culture and art. He set up a "Hanekoran" (prestigious "railing") with a curved tip on the window of the building, and used the Katsura Imperial Villa as a reference when creating the garden and architecture. On the other hand, he did not forget to pursue the entertainment of the theater. The photographs at that time show amazing architecture, such as a tea room floating in a pond and a waiting room where a single pillar supports a thatched roof. It is recorded that there were various settings in the garden to entertain the guests who visited the theater. Unfortunately they were lost due to war and aging. However, the building that remains today is enough to convey to us its splendor. Although the water is now dead, the Chisenkaiyushiki garden has an elegant atmosphere with irises, which were rare at the time. Even now, in the spring, the cherry blossoms called "Yang Guifei" bloom, and the view of the garden from the window of the cafe looks like a splendid folding screen. We recommend that you use this "Horaien" for lunch or a coffee shop when you visit the adjacent Nakatsu Castle or Nakatsu City Museum. Beef curry for lunch is very delicious and recommended.

We are amazed at the old photographs of this garden. The house whose roof is supported by only one pillar, and the tea room in the foreground are floating above the pond.
