「乗光寺庭園」島根県・"Jokoji Garden" Shimane Pref

足立美術館にもほど近い場所にある乗光寺の創立時期は不明ですが同地が真言密教の修験地となった平安末期ではないかと地元では推測されています。庭園は庫裏の裏山の斜面の一部を築山として枯滝を中心とする石組を据え、その手前の平庭に飛び石を並べ、さらに大きな蹲の石組みを据えて築山と対比させています。この庭は「平安時代末期の枯山水庭園」であると幅広く紹介されていますが、確証はありません。基本的に庭を持つ古い寺は僧侶たちの暮らしに無くてはならない水の豊富な場所にしか作られませんでしたし、そこには必ず池庭が作られていました。この乗光寺の場合あえて水のない場所に寺を建てたとは考えにくく、本来は水があり池があったが長い年月の間に水が枯れてしまったと考えるのが自然ではないでしょうか。多くの場合、水が枯れると池は土砂に埋まってしまいます。古い庭は時代とともに姿を変えていくのが常なのです。また平安時代の枯山水は池庭の一画に据える部分的な石組を指す場合がほとんどで、現在私達が知る龍安寺石庭のような「枯山水」という概念はまだなく、それが確立するのは室町時代以降のことです。ゆえにこの乗光寺庭園が平安時代末期に最初から枯山水のみの庭園として作庭されたとは考えにくいと思われます。もしこの庭が最初から枯山水庭園として作庭されたと仮定すると作庭時期をもう少し幅広く捉えて、室町後期〜江戸時代まで広げてもよいのではないかと思いました。最後に話は変わりますが乗光寺では茶の湯が盛んのようで庭園を鑑賞する庫裏のお座敷には茶道具などの展示もありますのでせっかくなので見逃さないでください。

It is unknown when the temple was founded, but it is speculated locally that it may be in the late Heian period. In the garden, a part of the slope of the back mountain in the temple building is set as Tsukiyama (artificial hill) with stones centered on a dry waterfall, and stepping stones are lined up on the flat ground in front of it. And one big Water basin stone is sucked on the front side of the flat ground to contrast with Tsukiyama. This garden is locally believed to be the "Karesansui Garden at the end of the Heian period". The story changes, and at Jokkoji Temple, there is an exhibition of tea utensils and other items in the tatami room at the back of the warehouse where you can enjoy the tea ceremony, so don't miss it. Norikoji Temple is not far from the Adachi Museum of Art, so please add it to your tour list.
