★ scenic spot
In the Meiji era, when the former daimyo was obliged to live in Tokyo and was allowed to live in his hometown, Mr. Mouri set up a mansion in Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Mr. Mouri acquired a site of 300,000 m2 spread out at the southern foot of Mt. Tatara at an altitude of 225 m, and built a residence from 1892 (Meiji 25) to 1912 (Taisho 5). A golf course was built on the mountain, but the overall environment is protected and no modern architecture such as buildings can be seen in the entire landscape of the Mouri House seen from the garden. The garden is a Chisenkaiyushiki garden (boat-style) designed by making good use of the slope, and the scenery in the garden changes from moment to moment as you take a walk, and you will never get tired of it. The huge garden stone that overwhelms the viewer uses the granite that was on Mt. Tatara in the background. The huge Yukimi lantern seems to be a daimyo garden, but it is actually made of cement and modern technology is utilized (the huge Yakui gate, which is the main gate of the house, is also made of reinforced concrete).
In addition to the traditional pond garden and the Karesansui garden built on the flat ground, the characteristics of the garden may be that you can see the transition from Edo to Showa at once, such as the lawn open space and the planting of Metasequoia, which are very modern gardens. The scenery of the forest spring, which looks like it has taken in the nature of Mt. Tatara as a borrowed landscape, is interesting because it feels like a naturalistic garden in England, even though it looks like a Shugakuin Imperial Villa. In addition, the mansion with a site area of 4,000 m2 is unique to a large-scale daimyo mansion, and although it is a traditional Shoin-zukuri style using famous wood everywhere, it is a mix of Japanese and Western styles. In addition, there are Tsubo-niwa and Shoin gardens in the house, so there is no shortage of attractions. Gardening by Kintaro Sakuma, a gardener in Tokyo. Kintaro Sakuma stayed at the Mouri House even after the garden was completed, and spent two generations of parents and children maintaining the garden.
